Requesting Bass Info (Bongo content)

I am seriously considering taking a great offer for a sexy little 5-string Stealth Black HH Bongo, and I was wondering if you guys could give me some info on the Bongo line.

Nothing too subjective, but stuff one could not learn after an awkward 10-minute jam session at the local music store.

I am thinking about a medallion gold Bongo 5. Do a search here, read the reviews in HC, and go over to the EBMM forum. More specific questions will probably elicit a greater response too.

FWIH, the Bongo is very versatile, has a massive low end, great setup and playability. It is also very comfortable, and the low B on the 5 gets rave reviews for clarity.

Plus I have done my research, but I am more curious about its post-honeymoon shortcomings (as I implied in the OP). TBers are usually the most honest about such thongs, so I decided to ask here.

You want to know the shortcomings? People will tell you it looks goofy. You might smack the headstock on the ceiling and chip it. And judging from statistics, you'll probably end up with a second and third one, which only a shortcoming if you're married.

Do a search on "Bongo" if you want to know things about this bass that you can't learn in a ten minute smackfest at Guitar Center. Or maybe, I dunno, buy one used from the classifieds section here and sell it if you don't love it.

But criticizing free advice when you can't be bothered to use the search engine is kind of ridiculous, IMNSHO.

since you will find all the good things about the Bongo on TB, I will just share my little complaints. They aren't really significant, but just somethings that would go towards making a perfect bass

neck profile makes it hard on the inner joints of my fingers and the neck is wider than I like on a 4 string. Sterling necks are absolutely killer though. A sterling neck on a bongo... mmmmmmm

Volume pot is abnormally loose on my instrument compared to the other pots. oh well

pickguard edges abrade my finger when I play. I covered the problem area with a layer of electrical tape and problem fixed!

I love my Bongo 4. I'm hoping to snatch a sterling silver Bongo 5 in the near future. When they announced the new 2008 colors, I slapped myself in the face for not waiting 4 more months to buy a sterling silver than an egyptian smoke

And is there a problem with the input Jack? I keep hearing that it is loose.

I got a Bongo a few months ago, and I searched for Bongo threads with a lot of success. People either love or hate them and usually it has to do with the visual look of the bass.

It sounds like you are up on the look, so I think you'll be pleased. They have very versatile EQ and are quite easy to play. It's one of the easiest to adapt to any situation basses that I own, and I own quite a few.

Despite popular opinion, I did do research before making this thread (yes, I even used the fabled search bar ).

Thankfully I managed to get a few answers about the shortcomings of this Bass (all I see elsewhere is either design hate or just mindless circle-jerking), so that means this thread was a success


Also, I must say that I am very fond of the look of this Bass. What else would you expect from a conjoined MusicMan and BMW design team?
