A lot of the ampeg sound is the speakers and how they match up to an amp. The Hathor is a great cab, but try a more ampeg-like cab, like a sealed 410 with the WA. You can find smaller used ampeg cabs for pretty cheap.

Ampeg's history is rooted in the bass amp, unlike most manufacturers that started with guitar amps and added bass amps as a sideline. The name even comes from the position on a double bass where the pickup was placed. Their whole purpose is bass amplification, so being critical of them is a touchy subject for many bassists.

I don't know that anyone was being critical of them- I certainly didn't intend to come off that way. Though I admit, perhaps I have ignored them until now.

I would try that first and, if you have the chance, try two 1x15 cabs (or a 2x15) with the Walkabout as a comparison.

The room can make a huge difference as previously mentioned.

I do, generally speaking, seem to prefer the sound of 15's. Perhaps I should give that a try. I'll have to see how it goes with the pair of 1203's first.

Thanks for the tip- I owned an Ampeg cab a long time ago and remember it favorably. Recently I tried a pair of 210-av cabs but didn't really care for them.
I know the Walkabout really shines with more speakers- the best I've heard it sound live was through an old Mesa 4x10 backline.
I'd really prefer a lightweight modular rig rather than hauling a 4x10 again. I guess something's gotta give though.
