Double Bass Rev. Solo II: Which setup are you using it with?

Early '60s American Standard with Permanents...RSII into Fishman ProEQ preamp into WM12 amp.

I've been using this rig for a 3 piece blues gig with guitar and harp. Adequate volume and good tone without feedback problems.

This rig has the attack of the Bassmax and the clarity of the Underwood. The preamp's phase switch allows for easy feedback management. I can let the amp do the work and go easy on the right hand, which is helpful on songs with fast walking parts.

Unless the gig got bigger, this rig will do what I want for a this style of music. Part of my rationale is that I already had the amp and preamp and I like the thick sound of the Permanents compared to growlier strings.

Fully carved round-back, RS-II, pre-amp with adjustable high-pass filter, iamp200, Wizzy cab. This rig does just about everyhting I want it to do.

when are you going to let us know about that preamp with the high pass filter?

Please bear with me on this. Normally, I share just about everything I know and this one is difficult for me. The designer of the box I use is currently negotiating a distribution channel and I have been asked not to reveal any specifics until the deal is completed. It's a business thing with which I have NOTHING to do. I am hoping they will release me to open my mouth in a few weeks.

Until then, I can certainly speak about its function (and I have). The input impedance is 10-Mohm (great for piezos) and the HPF has a slope of -12 dB/oct, the corner frequency being tunable between about 40 Hz and 110 Hz. Currently, the fancier Fishman bass preamp has a similar tunable HPF.

are there any other eq controls on the unit other than the hpf? it sounds very similar to the fishman's hpf, but what is the slope of the roll off on the fishman? is it similiar?

There are no other eq controls. Personally, I rely on the parametric eq of the iamp200 for that. I believe the Fishman is also -12 dB/oct. I have performed very detailed laboratory measurements on the unit I am using. I looked at the shape and roll-off of the filter, distortion, and dynamic range. It is a jewel. I have not had the opportunity to perform similar measurements on the Fishman because they never asked for my help. I can't wait until the vendor allows me to say more!

well, hurry. so basically its just a hp filter with a 10 meg input? can we see a pic?

Bolo,

Where do you connect the solstice into the combo? Fx return?
If yes, this would be the same as using a powered wizzy, right?

Just asking because in my quest to find a good amplified sound I have thought several times about the combination of a solstice through a powered cab. But then I remind myself of the interesting extra features on AI preamp sections. I wonder why doesn't AI have a preamp... Something like the Focus or the Clarus without the amp. It seems like almost too obvious!

David,

I run the blended signal from my Solstice into the Active or the Passive input on my iAMP, not the Effects Return. The Active and Passive inputs sound about the same to me, except of course I have to turn down the gain on the input section of the iAMP when I use the Passive input.

I did try running the Solstice into the Effects Return once or twice, but to me I thought the overall sound was not quite as full. Maybe that's an impedance matching thing, I don't really know.

I will say that running the RS p/u alone (no mic, no Solstice) matches up real well with the input section and preamp on the iAMP, IMO of course.

I might also add that even though I bypass the EQ on the iAMP and run it flat, the EQ and presets are excellent. The only thing missing is a high pass filter, which as you pointed out the AI gear has, but EA does not.

here is my home made blender tailored for the rockabilly crowd the RS2 is blended with a piezo neck pickup.
The neck pickup input has a high pass filter to remove lo-end thump. You guys have got me thinking about a jazz version with a variable hi-pass and phase reverse switch and one input I think there is just enough room. The box is tiny (2" x 3" x 1") and it mounts on the back of the tail piece
