Revamping a Squier Precision Bass

Sorry, it has been a few days since an update. I haven't had a lot of time to work on it the last few days. I plan to do the final wet sanding and get some finish on the body tomorrow. I got my Quarter Pounder in today. I have it soldered to the electronics already. I should have the pickguard and the strings by the end of the week. I'll post some new pics when I get some finish on the thing tomorrow. I've got the headstock pretty much finished. I'm kind of hesitant to post pics because of the feelings of some people about the headstock decal, but if you want to see them, let me know and I'll post them anyway.

Please post pics of the counterfeit headstock! I love it when the fender camp get their knickers in a knot over such a thoroughly pointless point. :D

Seriously, people actually care about it - just slays me...

Me: "You're right, instead of being a genuine crappy bass, its a counterfeit crappy bass." :D

This thread made me laugh a bit... i'm re-doing my squier bass too... I'm going from red to oly white... and saw that your bass was white and you're painting it red... we should'da just traded bodies! LOL

I'm putting EMG's in mine... not sure about hardware changes yet, just taking my time.

Have fun!

Ha, that is pretty funny! Good luck on yours. You have a thread?

Here is my headstock before the finish went on. Taken on a lovely placemat that appears as if it is from the 70's :D

No one gave me crap when I did my Squier up with a Fender logo. Fender doesn't care what you do to your own personal instrument. It's when people sell these basses as a business that irks Fender. For instance, you won't see Nash or Atkinson basses sell their products with Fender logos on the headstock, but someone like you or I could do it all day long.

BTW, the decals looks great. Just make sure you bury it under clear coat.

I obviously feel the same way. It is my instrument, and I feel like I can do with it what I please. But, I did read the thread that came up a couple years ago that just blew up. I don't know if you've seen it, but somebody asked where he could get a good headstock decal to put on his Squier. The poor guy got flamed for like 11 pages by people calling him lame for wanting to do that and pointing out that the logo was copyrighted and it was illegal to put it on a non-Fender bass.

I've seen those threads. The only thing illegal is selling a product that is not the genuine article. People, just get passionate about their opinions and twist law to fit their view.

Make a "Fender by Squier" decal. ;) Squier headstock looks obviously different from fenders anyhow.

Well, I don't have access to the correct metallic inks to make the decal look right, so I just bought it. Also, I wouldn't go as far as to say that the headstock is "obviously" different. In fact, it is VERY similar. Upon comparison, the Squier headstock's "cutaway" up toward the end of the headstock is ever so slightly deeper and the differences pretty much end there.

I put a couple coats of finish on today.
Here are the pictures:

If you noticed the obvious difference in picture quality, that is because my girlfriend took them with a camera that is not primarily a phone :D

You can really see the "Fiesta Redness" in these pictures. It looks pink from the back and red from the front. Don't worry, I didn't screw up the paint that bad, it is just that much different in the different light.

I plan to go back tomorrow and fix a couple bad spots in the finish and put some more on. After that, I should be ready to let it dry for a couple days and then go on to polishing.

You can't go wrong with ReRanch Fiesta Red..Here's one that I did last year..80's MIJ neck and hardware..Warmoth pickguard and body..Curtis Novak handwound pickups with flats...this has become my "Go To" P Bass.
Good luck on the refinish..if you need any help there are lots of friendly folks over at the ReRanch forum, but it looks like you are well on the way..Cheers.
