Reverb increasing seller fees

As much as the increase sucks, I don't think it's a big enough increase that I'd have to raise my prices.
Very much so despite majority of the buyers I come across here lately are either boutique collectors or bass players looking for Fenders. So my hand me down Ibanez basses that are valued around $300 makes it kind of hard to move but I have made a couple smooth transactions from other bass brands. Only having to worry about Paypal fees ain't that bad while still keeping some profit in pocket

"Across all its broadcast partners — CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN and the league-run NFL Network — the NFL's regular-season games averaged 16.5 million viewers, up 5 percent from 15.76 million in 2018. It was the most-watched regular season since 2016, when NFL games also averaged 16.5 million viewers."
TV viewing habits shows how the NFL is still as dominant as ever
- Forty of the top 50 most-watched sporting events in 2018 were NFL games.
- Nothing came close to topping the Super Bowl, which had more than double the amount of viewers of the second most-watched event of the year — also an NFL game.
- From December 24-30, even with many TV ratings down, nine of the top 10 most-watched programs were football games — six college football games and three NFL programs.
A lot of us thought Reverb would go to the dogs after Etsy bought it; no offense meant to the many pooches of Talkbass.
True, but my local GC surprised me the other day.
I was looking at a PRS CE24 that they had in stock, which is rare for a brick and mortar store to have. I asked the guy if they could do their usual 15% off for me. The guy looked surprised and said, “that’s not something we normally do.” I responded with something along the lines of, “I get them all the time in emails but haven’t gotten one recently. Maybe ask the MOD if they could do something for me.” The guy left, came back, and said they can’t take anything off but could throw in a pack of strings.
I wasn’t necessarily expecting 15% off, but I was shocked that they didn’t seem willing to barter at all. I can’t imagine they are getting people in there regularly who are considering dropping 2k right now. Oh well.
Reverb's fee is 6.2% when you include payment processing--I don't see how you could get around the payment processing fee, is there some secret I don't know?--so I guess that'll go to 7.7%. They're also charging sales tax now to the buyer (even if the seller is an individual, not a business). Personally, all that makes the platform pretty unattractive to me.

I'll just stick to Talkbass whenever I can. It seems more profitable and you deal with good people.
Not that big of a deal to me. No one is making me use that site, and I don't pay them any fees for services until I sell something. The convenience of their marketplace is worth the small fee for me. I suppose if I was selling thousands of dollars of gear every month, my opinion might change, but as I said everyone is free to do as they want. In a world where we choose to use their site, and aren't paying to have an account or access to the site, I see no reason to complain.

It's definitely financial, but to political ends. These companies want to recoup the profits they donate to causes. They want political goodwill while they get a tax write off. Using my money.
As for political, I don't agree that everything is. Not everything has a veiled meaning; when is a cigar really a cigar?
However, you are in good company, as Aristotle thought Man is a political animal.
What I don't understand is why some of their shipping rates are astronomical, and some are very reasonable.
I've shipped a 50 pound cabinet from CA across the country for $60, but then a pedal in a box comes out to $30 or more...?!
I will say that their shipping coverage has come in handy when UPS delivered an amp to the wrong address. No hesitation or BS, just reimbursement for myself and the buyer.
I don't sell much on Reverb anyway, but from my experience it's much more seller friendly than eBay.

The payment processing also isn't Reverb's fault. It's just not practical to take a personal check in the year 2020. So, you're forced to use a payment service. I personally can't stand Paypal. But, those types of services are a necessary evil. It's not Reverb's fault.
That's my point, though. I get that it's not their fault that payment processing fees exist, that's fine, but if there is no way around it, then just include it in the total fees. They're a little sneaky and underhanded in only mentioning their 3.5% fee (now 5%) while hiding the payment processing fee info on some other page.
Now, if they want to start allowing for cryptocurrency transfers and drop that payment processing fee, I'm all in
Edit: Other platforms, like TB, don't charge a payment processing fee. If I want to use PayPal with purchase protection, then I pay that fee directly to PayPal. There are pros and cons to both approaches, but in the end, I certainly prefer the flexibility that TB offers.

But, it's NOT Reverb's fee. It's Paypal's (or whoever's fee). It's pretty much accepted that you have to use payment services these days.
Being the payment processor is not without risk, and incredible amounts of work. Companies like eBay and Reverb would rather not enter that business. Processing the payments is dealing with credit card fees, dealing with refunds, dealing with fraud, dealing with chargebacks, dealing with exchange rates, etc., etc.. It's not a worthless service that should come free of charge.
