Reverse engineering vintage Haz Labs pre

It was pointed out recently that in the past LHZ would often offer a discount to TB users when we release a new product or update... That's true, and it's been so busy that I forgot!

For folks following this thread, we have finally released the MID-03 Midrange control for the LHZ preamp a couple weeks ago. Although this is a little late, we're offering TB users 10% discount on ALL products thru July 30th. Use code MIDJULY25 at https://LHZpreampshop.com to checking out.

In the meantime, I am going back to the drawing board to finish work on a totally new component that I'd started a year ago. Not a clone... and original design intended to solve a problem I'd been asked about dozens of times. No spoilers yet (don't want to give the copycats a clue on what will drop next!), but I will be contacting our trusty TB beta test team when I have a working prototype...

thanks for the discount @AgingEngineer , it pushed me over the edge so I ordered the haz with active volume for my newly acquired epiphone les paul "the vinnie". it comes equipped with EMG HB pickups like a steinberger...so i kinda HAD to do the HAZ.
I didn't know there was a Les Paul bass model until you mentioned it! How do you like it? Hope you post some video or sound clips from this project!!

Wondering if this is somewhat backwards compatible, I ordered a full LHZ-04 with mid-control + balancer + second mid-control + switchcraft like a month ago as well as a full LHZ-04 + balancer few months back when it came out!

I added some EMG X Jazz pickups and a LHZ pre to my new custom 32" Mensinger Cazpar yesterday and I sounds amazing now. It was just passive with a set of Delanos in it originally. Thank you for creating this Lonnie! I love this Pre-Amp!

I was very excited to get the Spector tone out of my Ibanez, but I wasn’t aware how addictive the dimed setting would be. I just don’t want to turn the knobs down. Install was a breeze! I added the midrange control and the active blend, along with a switch for my EMGTW bridge pickup. The solderless jack was the icing on the cake. I think my 10 year old son could have installed this.

If I had just one gripe that would be the mid control seems to be very aggressive just off of the detent in either direction. I’m sure using the dimed settings makes the mid control more extreme, but it would be cool if the overall effect of the mid was lessened so the knob was more useful closer to detent. It obviously sounds great set to flat and boosting just past the detent gave a nice mid snarl, the cut is a bit too extreme in my case. I should experiment with the different dip switch settings to see if you didn’t already address this.

Thanks a lot for the great preamp and all your wisdom and insight throughout this thread!

That is a FANTASTIC looking bass! Control wiring looks great too! Would it be OK to use a couple of these photos and your comments in a post? I'm trying to get better at posting updates on social media and would like to share some client success stories. Happy to include any links or hashtags you'd like to reference.

Yes, that midrange control has a LOT of range to it! Far more than I think any of us might actually use. I might make a version in the future with a bit tamer range, but then again, there are some really funky things you can get out of that range of control.

Your thoughts on the dimed setting mirrors my own reaction: it felt VERY reactive to play. Nice and safe and predictable when playing moderately, and feels a little dangerous when digging in. The amount of boost ALSO impact how easily it gets into that tasty overtone range.

I'm glad you are digging it! I've actually had several Ibanez players asking about the LHZ, so I'll point them this way!
