Reversing P-J Mod???

Well, it's different - but do you think it cops the vibe?

Looks awesome! Super jealous!

I was looking for a finish that would be authentic to the original color and reflect the age of the body (50 years old), but loved. I'm careful with my basses and never have buckle rash, but they do show their age and occasional bumps. :hmm:

This is how she will be gigged. (Can't do the pup cover) Wear is too far towards the bridge end for my playing style. It's more the wear of a pick player, or guitarist. I'm a finger player, but I'll do my own authentic wear soon enough. She was fantastic to play Saturday... looking right and SOUNDING GREAT! :bassist: It's been a long long time since she looked this good. I really think that justice has been done to her!

I think it's looking great. I love the color, and the tugbar is just right. I think the PG is looking really white, but I'm not familiar with how they look when aged. I've heard of people dunking them in coffee to give them a bit of a tint...but I'm not sure that would be what you want. And I sure wouldn't relic it any more than it already is.

In terms of value, this is a really interesting case for those who collect. The body is late 50's, the neck is early 70's, the paint is new, and the electronics are all modern. OTOH, setting a value is irrelevant unless you want to insure it, as you're surely not going to part with it. If you ever do sell it, I think this would be a classic case of value determined by the market - it would be worth what you could sell it for, and that would depend a great deal on the buyer's desires.

THANKS! I'm very happy with the color too. The tugbar is original (transparent reddish when held to the light). I can't imagine selling this bass... she's my baby! The pickguard is aged mint (looks great with the OTM). Yeah, it's a mutt, but well loved. I really should get an insurance rider on all my basses (thanks for the reminder). I glad you enjoyed it. I do too! :)

The checking looks great on this.

Thanks!

I loved your project from start but the pseudo relic job on the body now makes the whole thing look fake.

To each's own... As I mentioned earlier, I'm not crazy about the forearm wear, it does look contrived up close, but I really like the checking. And that (all earned) wear on the neck mounted on a pristine body would look stupid to me.

Updated pic (I've gone to the tort pg now - Pickguardian, aged by Ben Lindsey). New/old RW neck on the way. This originally had a RW neck (which is how I figure it to be a '59). The restoration continues...

Yeah, I agree with Jazz, it is your bass, but I would have loved to see her restored with a pretty new paint job. I had a parts bass I bought in 81 that had 73 jazz neck, the serial number on the back plate dated the the P body to 61, I was young and dumb wound pawning it after many more mods....

Personally I would not have done a relic paint job (especially the "forearm wear" spot - I am not a fan), but that's just me...and it ain't my bass! A great color and a superb job all around!

The forearm wear is wrong for my style of playing and I didn't ask for it - I wanted the paint to show it's color, with minimal relicing. I guess they thought it appropriate - I will add my own wear over time, but as I'm not getting any younger and I'm no longer playing 5-6 nights a week it will be a long time. :( I really like the checking - that is exactly what I'd hoped for.

I did it in the mid 70's and it wasn't vintage then :( (note the 70s spacing). I was thinking that if I could use the pickup as a guide I could get a block to fill it... it might work. Has anyone here done it?

Why would you want to "reverse" it? Once you cut the wood up, it's no longer stock... I'd just leave it in there and actually USE it. I absolutely LOVE the PJ sound...
