Review of my Ramirez Custom

Hi guys, thanks for all the nods!

Bhuti, I appreciate you taking the time to write this and I'm glad to know that you like it. You were not at all a 'buggy' customer and I enjoyed very much working with you on your bass. Also, you are a very nice person and my family and I enjoyed your visit a lot! Like I said, you now have friends in VA.

By the way, the sandwich was INCREDIBLE! The pork was perfect, the bread he baked was unbelievable, if not true to pure cuban sandwiches, but definitely delicious!

Also, I do not consider anyone pointing out flaws on my work an insult! Not at all, like I said on the build thread it's something I request in order to improve my work. Even if it's not to point out 'flaws' per-se, but if there is anything that you think would have made the instrument better for your particular taste it also helps me know what people in general like.

Thank you, Bhuti, for your trust and everyone else who has complimented or criticized my work.

Okay, First of Wilser is an awesome guy and a great builder. I drove to his place yesterday to try it out and then drove back to NY to gig with it that night. With that being said, here we go:

My theme with this bass was clarity and accuracy. and it was absolutely dead on.

Sound: Piano-like clarity, thick full bottom and sparkling highs. It can shake the ground and then make dogs scramble. The audere is very flexible and can do so much. I tweaked it this morning and spent about an hour getting "my" sound out of it and it was just a matter of messing with the peaks and gains on the zmodes.

The pickups are very accurate. They don't let me get by playing sloppily, the force me to be on my game. I love it... I opted for an active passive switch. SAME SOUND in passive mode. And the controls are very Anthony Jacksonesqe which is a big turn-on. Other than that it sounds nothing less than amazing. It mixes well on stage and solos effortlestly.

Construction & Feel: The neck is a dream. It just flows. 90% of the little tweaks that i wanted i didn't even notice, it just happend. It allowed me to play and do my job. i have a zero fret with banjo frets on this one. I chose them to make the exact point where i hit the note very accurate and percise. and it worked. The body is solid and the strings are nice and taught. I have to get used to a 35, but i have large hands, i can manage. The Extender does it's job and is now set to a B, so i can play Carribean jazz projects version of Bemsha Swing. If you don't know, find out.

The finish is great. There are a couple of spotty parts but it is very even and appeasing to the eye, doesn't make the neck sticky either. The jack is solid and the knobs are VERY well place. I originally had a very specific request to have the knobs cascading at a certain angle, and it was too large for the cavity, but i asked for the same exact layout as anthony's ramirez and it's perfect. i can make all the changes i need in one sweep.

Customer Service: I am annoying. VERY annoying. I change things last minute, i ask for special things, and i wake you up early. Wilser had NO issue with any of this and i love him for it. He's an amazing person and very accomidating, he worked with me and made my dreams come true. He updates often and has a good sense of humor.

Overall, on a scale from 1 to bacon, this is a jesus christ. I have one of the first of a long line of basses to be prized and tresured over in the future. Fodera, Ken Smith and Sadowsky need to watch out because Wilser is on his game. Everyone needs a Ramirez.

I'll have clips from rehearsals and gigs soon so look out for it. Now do i look happy?

You were also very descriptive in your review. You didn't leave anything out-good and bad alike.

Everyone needs a Ramirez: YOU'RE RIGHT. (The bass world might be a better place to play in...)

Question: What kind of rig setup are you running the bass through?

Just thought I'd ask.. :D

I watched wilser build this bass from planks of wood on the Luthier's corner. It is awesome to watch it go from pencil sketches on a figured top to the customer playing it on stage. Great looking bass. Congratulations on your new piece of art!

Interesting, since i play in NYC, my rig changes most every night. Right now i've played through a GK head and Ampeg 810 on my last gig, at home i have a Peavey Studio Pro 112 guitar amp because i sold off my Redhead, and if i'm balsy i play through my tiny crate guitar amp at home to practice. He're are my perspective rigs in the buying:

Gigging Rig:

Acme B-2 Cab
QSC GX5 Power Amp
Universal Audio SOLO-610 Pre/DI

Super Sexy Time Touring Rig:

2 Acme B-4 Cabs
QSC PLX3602 Power Amp
Universal Audio LA-610 Mic Pre

Again, my sound is big, clear, accurate, and balsy. If you don't know about the UA gear. FIND OUT!

As soon as i get the rig/s, i can update and give samples.

Okay guys,

2 weeks in:

I've played in about 20 different places with this bass and it's awesome. The clarity and everything i've previously stated is attributed to the bass itself. I now must invest in some lemon oil and a glossy polish, but other than that it's awesome. I've changed the strings once for the sake of me being very anal about strings now (Thanks Janek) and i've kept the neck under observation due to frequent weather changes and stuff and it's been behaving. I keep it in the case when it's not being played so it's a-ok.

Other than that, I haven't gotten a chance to record on it yet. CANNOT FRIGGIN WAIT. Samples will be up as soon as they are available.
