I'm sure all the UK members and Aussies will already know, but it seems like maybe some others don't know about the slang.

I can only use it online these days, since no one around me gets it.

Ruby Murray = Curry
Dog & Bone = Phone
Rubber Glove = Love
Troubles & Strife = Wife

Rhyming slang is just one big inside joke that needs constant explaining.

You don't have to be English. The Scottish, Welsh, and Aussies use it too. (can't say about the Irish)
I've even known some Canadians who understood, but almost never any other nationalities.

People who intentionally obfuscate their communication I find to be tiresome and have little to say of importance.

I wouldn't generalize everyone who uses rhyming slang like that. After all, I think Winston Churchill used it.

No, regional dialect is like if I say Tomaetoe, and you say Tomahtoe.

Rhyming slang is just that, slang.
You use one word to mean something completely different.

For instance:

Boat Race = Face

She's got a lovely arse, it's a shame about the boat.

I don't understand the purpose of using slang that most people wouldn't understand. Is it to amuse yourself? Or is the slang usage supposed to make you seem worldly and well traveled?

It's not objectionable. I just don't understand the purpose. You used it in a thread about an Australian but you weren't speaking to Australians.

My buddy Gary speaks Chinese. He doesn't interject random Chinese words into his speech when he's talking to me. He doesn't do this because he knows that I don't speak Chinese.
