Rhythm Runs in the Family

My sister just found this old pic of our late-dad from his high school days playing in the local municipal band:

Don’t hold this against me, but he’s the one with the sticks. :smug:

My uncle and my step-father were drummers. I was very interested in it when I was a kid, but for some reason the middle school bandleader put me in the brass section. I was not good and gave up on cornet after a couple years. Never got back to drums but I discovered guitar and bass, and been there ever since.

Dad tried to teach me drums when I was maybe 7 or 8, but I got bored pretty quickly. Discovered the DB at 10 and the BG shortly after, and the rest is history.

My nephew (who never got to meet his grandpa) turned out to be a pretty good drummer, though, so maybe the drum gene (mutation?) skips a generation.

I started out on drums. Learned and got pretty good at it on a friend's set. My parents would not buy me a drum set. So I moved on to guitar because there was one in the house and all the neighborhood kids played. I sucked at guitar and all told me to play the bass because nobody else wanted to. I proudly refer to myself as a drummer's bass player and I base a lot of my groove and funk on the kick drum and snare.

My 13-year-old grandson is learning the drums and he has a really good sense of rhythm and groove. He HATED drumline in middle school because it was so structured and sterile. Here's the conversation he had with my wife:

Hector: "Gramma...I know you like the idea of me being a musician but I really don't like drumline and don't wanna do it anymore."
Grandma: "But you're so good at it. What don't you like about drumline."
Hector: "It's too structured. It doesn't have any feeling to it. It doesn't have...what's that word Grampa says that that sounds like the F-Word?"
Grandma: "FUNK?"
Hector: "Yeah...it doesn't have any funk!"
Grandma thinking in her head: "(Oh my God...you're talking just like a musician)!"
