Ric 4003 Inquiry

Hey, I was just wondering what purpose the metal around the bridge pickup serves. I already removed the pickup cover but the metal around it is really annoying and hurts my fingers, and I was wondering what was the purpose of it was, and if I could take it off.

Its purely cosmetic. The original ricks had a horseshoe pickup where the bent metal was magnetic and was actually required as part of the pickup. Rather than make those, or use the faux ones like the reissues, they have been using chrome covered plastic pieces on the later 4001s and all of the 4003s. Here is what an old rick looks like (via a GIS): http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-1/928527/1999RM.JPG

I believe he's referring to the entire pickup surround, and not the pickup cover, which he's already removed.

You can purchase an insert pickup surround so your thumb doesn't go down into the cavity, and the metal plate feel sharp around your thumb. In 1993, that's why I sold my 4001 and got a 4002 instead.
