I've never measured, much less thought about it, but I do know it's among the tightest of any bass. 19mm at the bridge would seem big to me, since I know that a 19mm spacing on a 5 string is too wide for me. 11mm at the nut sounds about right.

I think that it would help to tell us the year. The nut is wider nowadays than it was in the past. I am not sure when it changed, but I do know that the older 4003 has a nut that is not as wide as the recent ones. My 2005 for instance has the wider version. You could write or call Rickenbacker...

Yes. Those measurements are spot on, at least for my 1973 4001.

If no one else has done it by the time I get home I'll post my 2006. It's tight but not that tight.
I just measured my 82' 4003. Here are the results:
Nut: 11.3 mm
Bridge (at saddles): 17.3mm
Odd that we would get different measurements, but I just re-measured three times to make sure my measurements were correct.

It becomes more and more interesting. 4001s look more wider at bridge and 4003s seem to be narrower based on the data posted here...

I get 11.5mm at the nut, 17.5 at the bridge. My measure isn't as accurate so I'd say that sounds about right with Jjango's measurements.

I had a '72 4001 and as I recall, the spacing was close enough to Fender that I didn't notice a thing if it wasn't the same. No longer have the bass so I can't measure. Back then, bass players didn't seem to argue about string spacing as much -- probably because there weren't that many options.
