I am oh-so-tempted to pull the trigger on this but need to know if anyone has installed one on their Ric Bass and what their impressions were. Price-point aside. Just tonal remarks. Horseshoe Bass Pickups Thanks,
my Lollar Horseshoe is here ! I need time for te installation...then i'll record 2 waves files, 1 with lollar magnetic horseshoe and another one with the reissue rickenbacker horseshoe. give me a couple of days.
The price of them is ridic, though. Ok, the steel and the bending process of the shoes will ramp the production cost up a bit but a big part of me reckons that these pups retail at the price they are for Rickenbacker takes a cut of it, possibly a condition of the OOC settlement Jason made with RIC. If I ever decided to sell my Greco up there I'd take the Lollar out for sure. Also, check out Gemini Pickups in the UK. They sell quality aftermarket pups. I have their vintage-style 'Waverider' in another of my Grecos.
i'll post the audio files in 2 days...my Gf is asking for a "sunday at the sun"...and me..i'll love a "sunday with the iron solder" and the digital recorder.... lol
I agree, the price is really high for a pickup, I have 3 ricks and 1 greco...and the toaster at the Greco sounds better than the toasters at the original rick, but this horseshoe is very special..but still a bobine with a magnetized piece of steel around...
Greco toasters are ceramic so they will have a lot more grunt than a contemporary 4001. But I think that part of the 4001 attraction was that slightly weak front pup. Team that up with the rear and that was the 4001 sound. All the best with your tests. Let us know how you get on with the Lollar.
I'm waiting the low impedance horseshoe before recording any demo, I have an issue (that's normal) a mismatch impedance, actual toaster is 10,7 k and horseshoe is 7,4....so I need a 7,4k toaster, otherwise, when I use both pickups at max. volume...the output is not the right one...
I have the Gemini waverider pickups installed on my wonderful 4003s, they simply rock, so much definition and beefier tone than the standard ones..... I can say that because I have a 4003 with standard pickups in it and I can compare side by side. Same strings, same rig, etc. and the difference in the body of a 4003 should not make such a big difference and I attribute the beefier tone, and the much higher output, to the waverider pickups!!!
I also ordered a Lollar shoe know.Should bei Here in 3-4 days. Question : Do you use them with or without the 3rd cap ?
I don't understand the price actually. Even much more complicated designs like Darkstars are way cheaper. Top quality and labor ok but this seems a bit exagerated to me.
I'm disappointed, I was hoping to hear that pickup. Lollar pickups are not cheap, I have them in my T-bird but they really sound good and are worth the money.
