Rick 4003 vs Peavey T-40

Hi everybody.

This time I've wanted to offer you fellow bass players the chance of comparing two instruments that many feel very similar in character, despite the big price difference: The Rickenbacker 4003 and the Peavey T-40.

For this task I've chosen the great rock tune "Cupid's Dead", originally recorded by the band Extreme. I had to remove the second verse for the video not to exceed the 10-minute limit. I don't want to give an opinion about which bass sounds "better" to my ears (Just to avoid preconceptions), so I'll only talk about how these instruments were recorded:

I've owned both and much prefer the neck on the T-40. I also like the broader range of availabe tones of the Peavey. I'm going to be a bit biased.

I agree 100%. I also think the T-40 body is much more comfortable.

However, the Rick wins in the the looks dept.

It sounds like the A on the fifth fret of the E string on the Ric is dead.

I don't like either of the tones he is getting a whole lot. Prefer the Ric just slightly for the extra warmth in its sound. The T-40 really doesn't suit me at all.

I've had about a half dozen of them. Not one over 11.5lbs. The T-45's are a bit heavier because there is less wood taken out for the second pickup and the control cavity is smaller.

Agreed. For my tastes, neither does it for me. That being said, I have always known that the 40 cops the Ric tone, so that doesn't come as any surprise to me. And, as a Ric player the only thoughts I have there is change the strings....

Interesting IMO, I'm a Ric guy, but the T40 sounds good here.

OOOHHH, this is a hard one, being the previous owner, and lover, of five Rics, and the current owner of a T40. If money is no object, buy the Ric, but, T40s, which sound great, can be found for $200 to $400. Just be cautious about the condition of the T40, as parts can be difficult to obtain.
Having said all of that, I must admit, that after obtaining the T40, I am a lot less willing to drop the money on a Rickenbacker.

It's hard to tell anything with the horrid sound quality of the Ric farting out the mic's input.

Funny that the instrument not "known" for its' bottom end is completely overloading the low-end.

I have pics but it's the plain wood version. Very good condition with molded case also in great condition.

I have a T-40 and a 4003 -- they do not sound that much alike.
