Quest for Tone - Update

I picked up the Peavey T-40 bass today, got it home and fixed it up. The bridge pickup was broken so I fixed that and put new DR HiBeam strings on it. The frets were tarnished so I shined them up and buffed the pick guard.

I picked up the Peavey T-40 bass today, got it home and fixed it up. The bridge pickup was broken so I fixed that and put new DR HiBeam strings on it. The frets were tarnished so I shined them up and buffed the pick guard.

Great playing! I always thought a T-40 would compliment my 4003 quite well.


Imo - the harder the woods get and the thinner the bodies, the closer you get to a Ric tone. T-40's are made from Hard Ash, which isn't too far from Rock Maple in hardness and "dryness"(important for the top-end "clank" - Walnut for example, is hard but very oily and has more subdued highs)

A Gibson Ripper is even closer to a Ric's natural tone, and I believe the Maple and the neck joint(set neck, on the Ripper) is what attributes to this trait, especially since they both have totally different styles of pickups:

Lots of basses can cop a Ric tone. I don't think people are surprised. Lots of basses can cop lots of other basses tones. Ric's can cop a lot of other basses tones as well. Can you find a cheaper bass and get it to sound like another bass? Of course.

I agree, man. Although I prefer a Ric, I know that if I wasn't lucky enough to get mine dirt cheap(870.00 with a small amp, too!), I'd be saving for one and playing something like that T-40 in the meantime as I'm a big Peavey fan, too.

The differences I talked about previously would very likely get lost on a normal, non-bass nerd

I'll stick with my T-40 without a doubt. I wouldn't mind owning a Ric for a bit to compare for myself, but I love my T-40.

Another nice comparison. I noticed that the player (you?) used their thumb for the T-40 and regular finger style for the Ric.
