have always been a huge fan of The Band, and Rick. Saw then once, in Tuscaloosa, AL around 72-73. Loved the way Rick weaved his bass lines throughout the tunes like nobody else I had heard. Number please

Been listening since Big Pink - and with Dylan before, number please. Thanks for setting this up.
I've been on a big Danko kick the last few weeks, and regretting that I sold my Ampeg scroll bass years ago. May I have a number?
Ahhh...Rick Danko, what can I say!
It all started in around 1967 or so for me when I saw him with The Band at a local community college here on Long Island. The bass player blew my mind and so did The Band, just awesome! I had heard of him through a friend who saw Dylan a bunch of times. Dylan's band prior to Rick Danko had Harvey Brooks on Bass, Robbie Robertson on Guitar and Levon on drums....later Rick came and became the Bass player. You can see from my profile Harvey Brooks and Rick Danko mentioned as big influences on my bass playing.
Fast forward 30yrs, I am in a club in NYC..The Lone Star Cafe (Levon Helms ex wife owned the club)where I went to see the New York Rock and Soul Review. Donald Fagan and friends with Phoebe Snow and who is that Bass Player this evening? Yes, Rick Danko...he rocked with them! During a break I am getting a beer and who walks up next to me but Rick Danko. I shake his hand and tell him he was a big influence on my playing and buy him a beer....we chatted for 45min or more then he went back on stage. After the next set he came over to me and we picked it up where we left off for an hour or so. We talked about Dylan, The Band, Woodstock, The Last Waltz, we had the same birthday...December 29th. What a great evening it was for me!!!
I was very saddened by his death! A friend of mine on this website saw him playing at a back yard birthday party not too long before he died. Rick was and awesome player and a real gentleman!! Did you know he had his own bus for gigs because he was afraid to fly...what a great bus too!
Anyway....one of my all time favorite bass players and so happy I got to meet and chat with him!!!

Going to see Dylan again in October. Only ever seen him with Tony Garnier though. My wife's dad saw Danko play with Dylan, and to this day says it's the most complete performance from a bass player he's ever seen.
Love Rick Danko...check out the YouTube clips of Rick, Janis and Jerry Garcia on the Festival Express..Rick is absolutely trashed but it's cool to see those 3 together. All of them gone now, sadly...
Seeing Rick play that Ampeg in the late '60's inspired me to pick up fretless... I was truly amazed! Always a big influence. I'll take a number as well, thanks.

Picked up the DVD "The Band: Classic Albums". Really good documentary about the making of the second album. Footage of Rick playing his Jazz Bass through a drip edge Fender 2x15 cabinet at Bearsville
I watched this last night. It's a great look at the songs on both Music from Big Pink and The Band. The interview and performance segments with Rick were really nice. And Robbie Robertson's commentary about the bass & drum groove on "King Harvest" was pretty cool, too.
Indeed. Watched The Last Waltz with my family (kids are 8 and 12) this past Thanksgiving. When Rick sings the lines "Well, I love you so much, It's all I can do........."
My son (the 8 year old) turns to me and says "It sounds like he's crying"
I simply said "Exactly".

I completely agree with you here, that song always gives me chills as well. The Last Waltz version is probably the best in my opinion.
I didn't realize this club existed until today. The Last Waltz version of Makes No Difference is in every one of my iPod playlists at the top. It's a bass/male vocalist version of Billie Holliday or Janis (Poor Janis) Joplin IMHO laying their heart out there. I humbly request a number please.

It seems appropriate to the era. I never got the sense that Danko was using roundwounds on anything I've heard him play.
