Sad one.
His playing influenced me to a degree, although like most of my influences, I can’t match them.
Here’s a live version of my favourite song of his,although it will now be kind of bittersweet.

Bummer! His mid 70s quartet instantly transports me back to my youth and remains one of my favorite listens when I want to hear something that truly rocks!
Not to be forgotten, Rick played the bass on the studio recording of Rock & Roll Hoochie Coo. It’s a killer part and a great tone.

Funny how the obit from the Associated Press left out any mention of the Winter brothers Johnny and Edgar. That was where he started to get noticed as a producer as well as guitarist.
This album was his first full production credit (he shared co-producer credit with Johnny Winter for the two Johnny Winter And albums). It would be a couple of years before he would do his first solo album, but he’s name checked and shown on the cover even though he only played on a couple of the songs. It went gold which certainly boosted his profile.

Saw him open for Henry Gross and Aerosmith at The Aud in Buffalo in the mid-70s. Vinnie Appice on drums. Don't remember the bassist.

Back when record stores were a thing (i.e., when I was ~11 years old) I would always gravitate to the Roadwork album and just stare at those pics...I had no idea what the music sounded like, but I just knew whatever those four guys on the cover were doing had to sound cool!
Full Disclosure: I have still never heard the Roadwork album! Think I'm gonna dial it up on youtube and raise a glass to Rick's memory tonight.
pre-Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell was only 19 and killing in that band.
I think Rick was responsible for Edgar pairing down that band and going in a more straight ahead rock direction for his next phase, and it worked. Just like he did for Johnny. I preferred White Trash to Edgar's later bands, but the new direction sure paid off. The White Trash band was stocked with some great players, sax player Jon Smith smoked!
