What model is the one in the same row, but to the left of the 4000? I've never seen a RIC with pickup placement like that. Now I'm way curious how it sounds.

Here's another Rick with that pickup placement.
I owned a 4002 for a decade,and really love the different sound the jazz bass placement brings.

A '62 Rick would be nearly impossible to find, and once you find it, it would be nearly impossible to afford. 1961-'62 was also the transition period from the old-style body shape and pickguard and simple bridge to the thinner body, new pickguard style and the cast aluminum bridge similar to the one used today. I've seen photos of only a handful of Ricks from that period, and they're in the book. Not likely you'll find them for sale. Don't feel bad - Rickenbacker wasn't even making basses in my birth year!

Since I remember voting for Thomas Jefferson -- when he ran for the House of Burgess in Virginia -- I seriously doubt that there are any Rics made in my birth year.

That's so cool, never knew they existed. Were these only made in a short run?

I think they were made from about 1977 to 1984, not many sold, I think they were expensive. I was never crazy about the looks but I bet they sound good. Maybe someone else who knows more about them can fill in here.

That is not how it came from factory......this photo is.
It Started out like this,and was customised by Dane Wilder. (Pickups moved,new wiring,custom pickguard,etc.)
Or were you talking about the 4002?

IIRC, 4002s were twice as expensive as 4001s.

I bought my Rickenbacker 4000 in 1978 for $300. I had no clue what I was getting, I was 14 years old and wanted one shaped like Paul McCartney's. I still have it, you can see it in my profile pic, it was made in 1974, and still sounds great!

I love how Ric's get called a "one trick pony"...the 4000 with it's single pup should really be a OTP but, again,the videos here prove otherwise..
BTW..that 4002 is very impressive..I've only ever seen\played one in the flesh and it was many years ago..
To those who want a 4000..a 4003 will get you well within the ballpark by soloing the treble\bridge pup...I do it quite a bit to get that sharp cutting tone.

I play my 4003 on the bridge pickup only most of the time.
