Rickenbacker 4001/3 pickup cover - why is it there?

I was 100% certain that once I owned a 4003 I'd have to remove the cover in order to play it, but lo and behold it's existence and being there is really not an issue.

I'll still remove it at some point, just to see what it's like to play with a pick over the treble pickup but for now it's a really great place to rest my palm while picking and also I'm really digging the chromey aesthetic.

I usually rest my hand on it when playing with a pick.

I find myself naturally wanting to pick right between the neck pickup & the cover, which sounds great.. interested in a bezel as well but'll probably just go without. The treble pickup looks pretty cool just hanging out naked in its cavity!

That's the main place I pick/pluck. When playing finger style, I usually rest my thumb on the edge of the pickguard, or on the edge of the body itself.

I occasionally pluck between the bridge and pickup, when I want a tighter sound or more "controlled" sound.

Thank you, the back doesn't look too bad, I think anyway. I had a Ruby, and sold it. It actually worked out better, the frets on this 4003W are dressed better than the Ruby I had. And I like the Satin finish on the back of the neck better also. Very smooth with no drag.

It's just like the cover on a jazz bass, originally put on to make it look better! has no function other than that! Leave it on, take it off, it's up to you, it won't affect the sound one way or the other and anyone who say's it does needs to go and take poopie, cause it's starting to come out of there mouth.
