Rickenbacker + svt for Araya tone.

Are you asking if you can get Tom Araya’s tone from a Ric and SVT? That seems possible, considering he’s used SVTs before. He’s also played Marshall rigs. As far as basses go, I believe he usually uses humbucker-equipped ESPs, so a 4003 wouldn’t necessarily be the best choice. With all that being said, a general “scooped” EQ setting and proper technique should still get you in the ballpark.
I love Slayer and Araya's a beast, but I think you can get his "tone" on any rig, just turn down all your mids and highs.
It was also written years ago on TalkBass, that all you need to do is play “karaoke bass”….
I heard one of his isolated tracks and it was pretty fuzzy sounding. It almost sounded like he was using a Big Muff.
A Ric might not be the best bass choice but it would work. Hi earliest stuff was done on a P bass and even used his fingers. This is an interesting topic. I've never heard anyone pursue Tom Araya's tone. I like Slayer but not a huge fan. I look at Tom as more of a singer with very basic playing that just holds the low end down. He's good and fast but nothing about his tone or playing really stands out to me.

Here's a good isolated track for South of heaven. Sounds like a PJ bass or maybe that dual P BC Rich. It's pretty good tone but it doesn't really stand out in the mix. It's a lot better than the other isolated track I've heard.

You can get his tone with a Squier with rounds and a distortion pedal .. di t need any of the exit dive equipment you mentioned

I’ve been listening to Slayer for ~35 years and have never even contemplated the bass tone before reading this thread.
That’s a better sound than I honestly expected, but the tempo is all over the place. Isolated bass tracks ALWAYS make me feel better about my own abilities.
Heheheh … I first heard slayer when I was a high school junior in ‘84 and I’m pretty sure the iso track above is the first time I’ve heard Tom clearly…

just play with a pick on the ric.. everything on full.. and then worry about the mix once you get in a the band situation.. if anything you just turn the volume down at the mix board..
80-90% of metal is tracked with a pbass.. direct and an sm57 on an ampeg speaker then blended and some comp for punch
