Talkbass brothers,

Let’s say the price difference between these basses doesn’t matter. Also , let’s say that I own both basses so I don’t really need to compare them - they are both fantástic.

Let’s say you had the extra funds burning a hole in your pocket. Which one would you buy?

I’m torn between a 4003s and a JC bass. I currently own a ric black star ( all black obviously) and a sparkling burgundy JC bass. I don’t mind buying another one of either one.

So , what would you guys do ?
Well... Since I also own both (with a '73 Rick 4001 and a '23 Guild Starfire I thrown in, for good measure) and have no need - or desire - for another of either? I'd have to say; I'm good, thanks. And, since I have way more than enough basses already, I'd put the money towards the Stage II tuning kit I'm planning to buy for my Harley FLRT Freewheeler. However...
By all means; buy whichever one makes you the happiest. Like I said; I'm good, thanks...

I too have both. Like many here, I wouldn’t want multiples of either.

How about split the diff and get a 4005?

Even if I didn't like Rics, I'd say go with one over a JC as I've heard they're kind of flimsy in some ways and I would imagine (having never played a JC) that the Ric will be a lot more versatile sounding and better made. I have a 2021 4003S (along with a 4001 and an early 4003FL) and it's one of the most solid basses I own. That being said if Gibson had made JC's I would have most likely already bought one (I know they made them years ago but not exactly common).

My head would say stick that money into your retirement account. But my heart would say get a second 4003 and tune it to an alternate tuning with different strings. I've actually done this and I love both my 4003s!

Plus, I've played quite a few Epiphone JCs and they were subpar for me. I've never gotten on with semihollow basses, but some bassists love them.
