Talkbass brothers,

Let’s say the price difference between these basses doesn’t matter. Also , let’s say that I own both basses so I don’t really need to compare them - they are both fantástic.

Let’s say you had the extra funds burning a hole in your pocket. Which one would you buy?

I’m torn between a 4003s and a JC bass. I currently own a ric black star ( all black obviously) and a sparkling burgundy JC bass. I don’t mind buying another one of either one.

So , what would you guys do ?

I do own both.
A 2009 4003 and a 2022 JC.
Two very different sounding & playing basses. For a bigger range of sounds I’d probably go with the JC.
I love my RIC, don’t get me wrong, but a RIC always sounds like a RIC.

I have both, love both, but very different in so many ways. If you are really set on acquiring another, I’d always lean towards another RIC, but that's just my opinion and I’d definitely only buy if I could get my hands on it for a test drive beforehand.
Happy shopping!

I'd go for the Rick, partly because I've just never jived with the big bodies of semi-hollow basses like the Casady, but also because I've wanted a Rick for years. I know they're weird and cantankerous instruments, and I should never get one without actually playing it first, budget in a Hipshot bridge and treble bezel, etc... but I love the way they sound and they look cool as hell.

I prefer the JC but I'd buy the Rick because of the higher re-sell value specially, if you buy used so you won't loose money if you decide to sell it.

Nevertheless, I'd get a completely different bass since you already have one of each.

I'd get me a J-bass since the JC can do the precision thing with the lower impendance.

FWIW the new (2023) RIC's are supposed to have neck profiles more akin to the vintage RIC's.
I have played a number of RIC's, (4001 & 4003) since the 80's, and prefferd the slimmer, slightly narrower profile of the older models.

I bought a used, 2015 4003s from a seller on TB and while everythoig about the bass was great, I could not get comfortable with the big, "D" profiled neck.

If possible try before you buy or make sure the return policy is one you can utilize if needed. I ened up looking for a vintage RIC and got a 1988 4003s. I love it.

The Ric is a vastly superior instrument. That is all.

Today I'd get the Ric because I've been listening to a lot of Warpaint, and there's the early Cocteau Twins stuff too... I'd be willing to trade for my JC because a Guild and a Reverend have put it out of business (except for when I want that exalted P bass sound). this track shows Jenny Lee Lindberg's Ric tone with a little chorus or flanging

If you've already got one of each, I'd suggest another Ric and string it opposite of the one you already have. If you're running roundwounds, string it with flats, or vice versa. That way you've got both of the greater Ric tonalities covered.

Or do that with a second JC.
