Maybe the JC because you have to dress cooler to play the Ric. That takes more time and money. Solved.

Talkbass brothers,

Let’s say the price difference between these basses doesn’t matter. Also , let’s say that I own both basses so I don’t really need to compare them - they are both fantástic.

Let’s say you had the extra funds burning a hole in your pocket. Which one would you buy?

I’m torn between a 4003s and a JC bass. I currently own a ric black star ( all black obviously) and a sparkling burgundy JC bass. I don’t mind buying another one of either one.

So , what would you guys do ?
You already have one of each. I’d buy another amp. Or maybe a cab.

In this really ominous and unpredictable World, I say, BUY WHAT YOU WANT TO, do whatever makes you happy. But, ask the wife first.. or, buy her something nice, too. No one knows how long our stay in this strange motor lodge will be, until there's that knock on the door from housekeeping... your checkout time may vary. If you don't buy that new bass, or the new car, or take a trip to go see your friends - when WILL you, before it's a regret, instead of a plan?
I wanted to buy a new Rick I played, about three years ago, but the slightly shorter scale - was something I could feel. So, I made my own Rick, with an actual 34" scale, and some pretty incredible flamed maple billets. I have pics on this site somewhere. Why go through all that trouble? Because- well, see the first sentence.

Talk about two different basses that have very little in common. Plus you already own both. I would judge it on need criteria:
Which one gets gigged more? Get an identical backup
Do I do a lot of studio work? Yes. So get neither and get something different like a Jazz bass
etc etc

I guess you tapped into something that I hadn’t considered: do what makes you happy.

It’s been my loving significant-other, mainly , insisting that I get another instrument, asking if I’d like her to gift me one. While this is very generous of her, I can’t think that buying yet another bass would make a difference in my overall happiness.

OP, you might clarify why you are thinking of buying another version of a bass you already own, regardless of which one you might choose. Are you a collector seeking an attractive alternate finish/color to display? Are you a gigging bassist who wants the security of always being able to bring along a backup instrument that can duplicate the sound and appearance of a bass you depend on?

Perhaps you would derive more pleasure out of researching and auditioning some other make and/or model of a bass that would offer you a new combination of sounds and looks, for variety.

Personally, I tried a number of long- and short-scale basses before deciding that the one I liked the best was an Epiphone Jack Casady Signature bass. Unfortunately, I also decided that I simply HAD to find one of the 20th Anniversary models with the Burgundy flame-top, so I had to wait until a pre-owned one became available — but it was worth the wait. Good luck to you!
