I just got my 5th 4004,and am going to try leaving the wiring stock for comparison.
For some reason,it doesn’t sound at all murky like my 2 cheyennes did before i changed out the pots.
My other 4004s all have modded wiring setups VVT,MV pan tone,or 2 vol 2tone,plus full size toggle.
After i had Dane wire the Laredo 4000V63 with just the one vol,one tone,and full size toggle,i realized i really liked that format,and it gave me 3 very distinct sounds.
Sometimes less is more....and as the owner of a 4000,i am unanimous in that!

The original 4004's were wired with 250k ohm pots ... about 2006 they went to 330k ohm pots ...

500k ohm pots is a better match for the 15k ohm humbuckers ...

This 4004 has 2 single coil pickups and it has a toggle and stacked pots ... it totally gets the 4001/4003 tone all day and then some ...

I’m mostly a “all controls wide open” player. About the only other tone i use is a Jaco-esque rear pickup,tone-rollled-mostly-off, sound for a few specific songs. It works especially well on the L4002v57,because of the J bass pickup positions,but also with my 2 4004’s that have the “lowered”
pickups positions,too. Oddly enough,the 4000 also has a great sound with the tone rolled off completely,too.

The lowered pickup positions are great until you need to change the truss rods then you you have actually remove wood to change the rods.

Yeah,that was definitely a design mis-step. On the other hand,i’ve never had any need to change the truss rods on any of my Ricks....
