Ricky build

Not posted up a prog shot for a while. body and neck have been tru-oiled and waxed. Bridge and rear pup fitted, some more wiring work needed then a good fret levelling and set up.

Is that bridge in the right place? On a real Ric they are farther back on the body.

Notice the 21 frets vs. 20 frets on a Rick--that may account for the difference.

No that's just a longer fingerboard. The distance from the 12th fret to the bridge doesn't change.

This has the bridge right up against the pickup. It should be at the back of the body.

Even if you slide the neck up one fret it shouldn't be such a big difference.

Something doesn't look right.

Does the distance from the nut to the 12th fret match from the 12th fret to the bridge saddles, plus compensation?

Was this clone 33.25" or 34" scale?

On a Ric, the 20th fret lines exactly up to where the body joins, on this the 21st does, indicating a slightly longer neck, pushing the bridge forward.
In a Ric's case, its not just a longer fingerboard.

Also, I believe Al uses a 34" sacle on these, rather than Ric's 33.5"

That, should make all the difference.

Since it's a neck through the body wings could have been lined up so the bridge is at the end.

If it's a longer scale length, the bridge would be farther away from the nut, not closer! The distance from the 20th fret to the 21th fret is 0.601" on a 34" scale... That bridge looks like it's moved closer than that.

They used to make 21 fret Rics. Rics are 33.25" not 33.5"

If it plays in tune, that's fine, but it puts the pickups in slightly the wrong location.

This is what a 21 fret should look like: (I found this photo on the 'net)

Al, looks like there are some differences in this compared to Rics. I would be interesting to get your thoughts on the design changes. The body on your bass looks wider than the 4001/4003 series Rics judging from the pickguard (assuming the pickguard is the normal size). Is the body also longer? Just following on from David's question about the scale length, it looks to me it may be the body dimensions (length and width) or a combination of both(?) possibly. Also, looks like the bridge pickup is further back (ie. distance between neck and bridge pickups is longer). If so, were you going for a tighter sound at the bridge pickup?

Whatever, I think its wonderful!

Totally agree that it's none of RIC's business about this bass. I own a Ricky (wouldn't have anything else) but I don't feel the need to rat out all the Rick copies or people who go for a Rick design. Last time I checked, it was still a free world! . Go for it man. Looks awesome!!!!

Tony on UK Guitar Forum kindly hosted my mp3 clip for me; it's a dry input into my multitrack, a simple bass riff starting with the neck pickup, fading into both together, then finishing with the bridge only pipckup switched in.
