Ricky build

No, I just ordered some, paid my money and they sent them to me. It's not like the TRC where you have to send the old one back before they send you out a replacement!
The pickups really are great! It's not against their interests if people want to put ric pups in as replacements for fenders or seymour duncans. I think there's a level of ridiculous paranoia surrounding ric gear; I guess it's all part of the mystique. You don't see everyone getting nervous on the PG forum when someone comes up with a home build Tele, strat or Les paul shape guitar.

EXCELLENT!

it sounds like a genuine, vintage lemonbacker! :D

that thing rocks...while ricks aren't my thing (I just could never get into how they respond for me) I think they sound awesome in the right hands...(you've got two right hands ;) )

congrats, you should be very proud...you not only have a very cool looking instrument, you have one that SOUNDS awesome, too...and that's the most important thing, IMO...

That sounds great. It's got a lot of the coolness of the ric tone, but to my ears it's a lot thicker in sound. A bit less of the piano bite, especially on the neck PU. Could be the overdrive on the clip, not sure. The bridge PU is extremely close in tone. All around this is amazing to me, especially considering this didn't even exist, what, a month ago?

Thanks everyone, I'm really taken aback by all your kind comments and support, it's been great having you all along for the ride! Tomorrow night, now I've got the action a bit slicker, she will have her first live outing at a gig in the pub down the road. Really looking forward to gigging the Lemonbacker(TM);)

Well, I'm gonna say that the bass is absolutely amazing! You've done a fantastic job. I only wish I had some expendable cash, to have you build one for me!!

And to all you naysayers/John Hall brownnosers, with your "tut tut, I wonder what Hall would say" nonsense....get a grip! The guy built a bass for his own use. He's not planning to flood the European markets with counterfeit Rickenbackers, nor is he ever planning to pass his work off as someone else's with a fake nameplate or other details. He's harming no-one.

Perhaps if the price of Rickenbackers in the UK wasn't so extortionate, he'd have bought one brand new. But I commend him on his ingenuity, and having the sheer skill to build it. Well done, chief!;):bassist:

Thanks eddie! The Lemonbacker has become my gigging bass of choice over the last few months. When the time is right I will build a mark 2 with a few of my earlier mistakes ironed out. I'll try to get a prettier maple top then just go for a natural tru-oil finish rather than the black lacquer. I'll profile the neck better and swap out the hardware. But for now, the tone is far more than I could have wished for. The ric pickups are truly excellent - you can feel your feet vibrating thru the floor when you play this bass, I don't get that vibe with any of my other basses. I like to think it's the maple/mahogany body combo that prevents the tone getting too harsh, it has an underlying warmth but really cuts through well. Really wish I could have afforded a real one but the whole build was a great experience as well as throwing more problems at me than any other build to date. Thanks again for all your comments!

9 months after, Lemonbacker gets a friend - here's the mark 2 version to be finished in natural tru-oiled maple cap on walnut body, cherry/maple sandwich neck. Still a bit more work to do on her.
