ridiculous mystery buzz

Could be tuning keys, could be trussrod, could be the bridge saddles not 100% stable (see if they move around), could even be the nut.

If it's the trussrod, the sound will come out of the neck pocket (usually).

Put your hands on various bits of the bass, and see if it still vibrates.

the bizarre thing is when i'm sitting in regular position it does the terrible noise, but if i lean it away from me and play it, it doesn't.

Interesting - do you have strap-locks, and is the strap attached but unweighted when this noise occurs? I had something like this with a straplock of the type that looks like little buckets.

Tell us when it doesn't occur, as well as when it does occur. (For example:- Sitting but not when standing; Open D but not fretted D on the G, D, A, or E strings; Open D but not F on the same string; When plugged in and volume off but not when cable is unplugged; In normal orientation but not when held vertically or upside down; etc) Might reveal a critical clue.

And when you discover the cause, please do let us know!

It doesn't seem to do it when vertically, but my attack may be slightly different..not sure. I'm taking it over to Sam Ash today, as I have 2 years of setups. If that doesn't work there's a fantastic guitar repair guy right up the street.


For now it's given me a reason to play my 5er.

+1 - my custom 6 string was making a sound like what you're describing... I was afraid my Lane Poor's were going microphonic on me... then noticed the loose pickup - it was fine after just a small adjustment!

I noticed a strange buzz some time after installing TI jazz flats on a MIM P. It took a while, but I finally figured out that the nut slot was too wide for the D string. These sympathetic vibrations are hard to pin down. I ended up getting a new nut cut for the P. It was a first for me, but I considered it a good learning experience.

UPDATE:

I just got it back from being setup. Truss adjusment seemed to do the trick. I guess. But it plays beautifully now.
