Rig set-up question not answered through searching...

...at least not answered through the several cursory searches I conducted. I did get some great research on rack effects and brand choices, though.

First off, I'm a noob and this is my first post after lurking here for about two weeks.

Second, my rig knowledge is...unsophisticated...so I may have indeed found the answer but not actually known it.

Finally, my question:

Does it matter where you locate rack items within the rack?

I want to set a head (ampeg B5R), power conditioner, compressor, tuner and sonic maximizer into my 8-spacer, assuming all will fit. Yes, it will be heavy.

Will the heat from one or more of these units negatively impact the other more delicate items in the rack?

Should I put the head on the bottom, conditioner on top and stuff the rest in between, or is there an established theory I should adhere to? Do I need to install a fan?

Sorry if this is one of a million posts asking this question.

Thanks for any help on this. You have a great forum here and I hope to grow into a productive member of it.

It doesn't really matter where you put everything as long as you get the cable chain right, though placement of the head is important because of the dangers of overheating. Basically work it so the head has plenty of room where the vents and/or fans are and it'll be fine.

My simple criteria:

1. where are the cooling vents on each item?

2. what's the heaviest item (head...)?

so, as long as vents are not obscured, heaviest on bottom, rest to suit taste

My Mackie vents from the sides (has its own 2 space rack), my Demeter vents top, but only at the rear, Rane comp has top vents (can't remember off the top, where), then my ventless Furman. Due to my Demeter being 1.5 spaces, I've displaced the empty rack area between my components...now my Rane gets air flow through the top.
