Right hand anchor point for playing over neck

My experience is that, if you decide to use a floating thumb approach, it doesn't mean you have to "switch over" to that technique. Float the thumb when you need to, anchor it when you are near the pickups. At least that works for me. I had to learn floating thumb back in the mid 2000's when I got my Stingray, but I still anchor to my pickup when convenient, especially on driving rock lines. Good luck!

BTW, DB players have been anchoring their thumbs on the edge of the fingerboard forever. Works fine on BG, too.

My DB teacher back in high school used to smack my right hand with a bow every time I tried to anchor my thumb. LOL.

On DB, I always anchor my thumb under the fingerboard.

Why not just rest your thumb lightly on the body when you play the E string? And let it rest on the E string when playing the A, D and G strings. Then you don’t need a thumbrest at all.

I never anchor my right hand. My bass teacher (pro jazz player) taught me the movable anchor technique, which is really the movable "mute" technique, so my thumb mutes the strings not being played behind my fingers.

This also allows the right wrist to remain more straight or at the same angle and reduces the pain that can come from bending ones wrist while playing.

YMMV
