for me originals were about getting all your friends to come along and listen and it was hard getting them to clap, then when i played in a covers band there were actually strangers clapping plus all your friends

LOL Icey101... Ok, but I had that lucky, that pople were clapping on my originals, also strangers, but what I meant is that I "get into it" so much, just like originals. And that's kinda strange for me..

I get into covers when I am listening to a band that plays them well

Me, personally I have no connection to playing covers. I have tried, it's jut not my thing.

I can be fully absorbed and "into" playing pretty much anything in the moment. Creatively , originals are more rewarding to have strangers clap at (or shout out the name of at gigs cause they want to hear it).

In my thinking, the craft of musicianship is equally rewarding, covers or originals. I place in a different compartment the craft of songwriting. So I suppose when I play originals and get a good response, I get a double win.

I've been bouncing back and forth between gigging in cover and original bands for 20 years. I like-em both, but on a creative level: I kinda equate cover bands as 'painting by numbers', and original bands as starting with a blank canvas.

Its usually easier to end up with a pretty cool pic when painting by numbers.
But I always have more pride in my accomplishments starting with a blank canvas...

I did not play covers fod 25 years, but now, when I study the song, I give something orogin of my selfe in every song...and here is the point, where classical playing/studying covers turns into the feeling of enjoying playing originals....that is whats happening to me.

Yes. The craft of musicianship is what is rewarding to me. Covers or originals. But giftedness in the craft of songwriting is what seems to be lost on most original material that I hear. And musicianship.
