Dang….
I remember the first time I connected with the music of CAN. I was in a used-vinyl shop in the East Village of NYC in the ‘90s. The girl working the register was playing CAN over the sound system. I was browsing, looking at different stuff, listening to the music, not recognizing it, thinking to myself, “This music has a great vibe.” One song after another, each one sparked the same thought in my mind. And yet, I couldn’t place it. I asked the employee what it was, and she just smiled and held up the album. I can’t remember if it was Tago Mago (1971) or Ege Bamyasi (1972). I asked her if they had any copies for sale, but they didn’t. Have loved and respected that band ever since.
Rest in peace, tone brother Suzuki-san!
