My DCT Story
I was a local publicist on an overseas military base for a USO tour he was doing in the mid-80s. He was highly displeased that the tour was being promoted as a BS&T show, when it was fundamentally a solo project—with pay to match. FWIW, I had nothing to do with ANY of that.
He had a fascinating personal history that I knew nothing about when I met him or for many years afterward. I can almost forgive him for being such a prick in that encounter. To him, I was another member of the machine that was using him.
Showbiz is a cruel mistress, and his got fouled up with politics, which just has to be the worst. He had a terrific voice, full of life experience, and one of the most memorable of his era.
It was a fine show.
RIP
Epilog: I met his band (seven players, all terrific) at a club after his show and had a fun conversation with them. They told me they had all of ten days to rehearse the show before hitting the road. Wow!
