RIP George Steinbrenner

Wow, there's a lot of deaths that have happened here lately in the baseball world. RIP Mr. Steinbrenner. Although I'm a devout Detroit Tigers fan I still feel as though you need remembered as a part of baseball history.

Steinbrenner involved himself in a hell of a lot of philanthropic causes in the Tampa area, many of which will never be known.

I still remember George bringing in "Catfish" Hunter. His first big catch.

Interesting (at least to me) tidbit. that brings it back to basses.

George bought the Yankees from the previous inept owner - CBS. They were no better at running a legendary baseball franchise than they were a legendary instrument manufacturer.

Fender vs. The Yankees

Well we know CBS bought Fender for about $13 million dollars in 1965 and sold the Yankees to Steinbrenner in 1973 for $10 million.

All the news on Steinbrenner this week and they are estimating the Yankees are worth $1.6 Billion.

"William Mendello, then president of Fender Musical Instruments, told Forbes in 1996 that he estimated the value of the company at about $250 million if it went public. Revenues for the closely-held company were estimated at $160 million."

Amazing what he did for the Yankees...

Listening to Tampa sports radio, I'm learning more and more of Steinbrenner's philanthropy. A wing of a hospital is public knowledge, but there are so many more examples of the good the man did that wasn't publicized. And to think when I was a kid, the NY press absolutely SAVAGED the guy.
