According to local news, NY Yankee owner has dies of a heart attack this morning in Florida.

Even though I'm a Mets fan, I am very saddened by this news.

About 45 minutes ago, I was watching the news. They said he had suffered a massive heart attack, but did not report that he had died. I suspected that a death announcement would be forthcoming real soon, since a "massive" heart attack at his age is usually fatal.

Sad news indeed. RIP...

George Steinbrenner, Yankees Owner, Has Died

George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the New York Yankees since 1973, has died in Tampa, Fla., at the age of 80, the team announced. During an often tumultuous reign, he placed his stamp on 7 World Series championship teams, 11 pennant winners and a sporting world powerhouse valued at perhaps
$1.6 billion. Mr. Steinbrenner had been in failing health for the past several years and had rarely appeared in public.

He revived the Yankees - where others saw a middling team playing in an old stadium in a tough part of town, he saw the seeds of a powerhouse team and a great business opportunity. He definitely made the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry more interesting.

Absolutely! I remember the Yankees being a laughing stock in the late 60s and early 70s. He took the once proud fallen franchise and made it proud again. And changed baseball forever.

I foresee the Yankees organization collapsing, much like the Padres did after Kroc sold them. Its a shame because George was one of the few left that rant the team as just that, and not a corporation.

RIP George, you will be missed by baseball in general.

As a lifelong Yankees fan I was saddened when I heard this news. It's been a sad week for the Yankees organization and it's fans. I hope that this doesn't ruin the future of the team.
