Who played that explosive sax line on Baker Street?

It's credited to Raphael Ravenscroft, although I admit not knowing who that is. RIP Gerry, for Baker Street, Stuck in the Middle and Right Down the Line, you'll be remembered for writing some great tunes.

I just read this on CNN this morning:

He recorded the 1978 album "City to City" in his wife's parents' house using a four-track machine, playing every instrument himself, Gray wrote. The saxophone-fueled "Baker Street" drove sales of the album, which sold 5 million copies and made Rafferty an overnight millionaire, Gray wrote.

He was indeed a very talented musician.

caboncow - the article is incorrect in saying he played all the instruments himself. The infamous sax solo was preformed by Raphael Ravenscroft.

Anyway, Gerry is still a great musician.

Same here. It's one of my favorites because it has a great bass line.
I also really like "Right Down the Line" and "Baker Street". He had a nice voice! RIP Gerry.

"Baker Street" has always been one of my all-time favorite songs.

Reading about him, I discovered that once upon a time he played in a band called the Humblebums with comedian Billy Connolly. Whoa!

Sorry to hear this. Rafferty & I were contemporaries in the Paisley music scene - same age. I first came across him when he was front for The Maverix and they & my band (The Original Corvettes - search for them on Youtube) appeared in the local Renfrewshire heats of the Daily Record MacBeat Competition (Scotland's answer to The Beatles!!!) in Paisley Town Hall in, I think, 1964 where they won the heat & we didn't(!).

He undoubtably felt the influence of his environment especially in Stealer's Wheel album 'Ferguslie Park' (where I taught for several years).

My last info was from a mutual friend who told me that his health was 'wrecked', but I hadn't realised it was that far gone.

Geoff, did you ever come across a drummer called Ron Mullen? He played in the HumbleBums, although I think it was slightly before GR and Billy C. He was my best mate for many years, until he passed away seven years ago.
