A long time ago I was in a duo which had a two week gig in a small mining town 132 miles of mud-rutted road north of Thompson Manitoba.
After playing the first night in this alien environment I returned to my hotel room feeling deeply isolated, lonely, and depressed to the point of seeing that onset of tunnel vision which accompanies suicidal thoughts.
My on-the-road sanity survival kit included a small table top-sized AM/FM radio which proved useless because there were no broadcast stations in range.
In desperation for some contact with the urban world, I got out a couple of those 20' orange-coloured outdoor extension cords, strung them together 'round the room as high as I could, and then plugged in the radio hoping I'd have an antennae that could pull in a station.
It worked, for as soon as the radio powered up this is what faded in to a room-filling crescendo:
Shortly after this tune was finished the signal receded to a snowy static. No further music was heard that night.
Thank you Gerry Rafferty. May you rest in peace.
Thanks to you, I did.
