Goldy McJohn, Original Steppenwolf Keyboardist, Dies at 72

Another one of Rock's foot soldiers is gone. A stalwart of the B3 organ, for some reason he never got props or the spotlight like Jon Lord or Ray Manzarek, but always came up with perfect, tasty parts, and was at least heard by millions rather than languishing in obscurity.
Aside from the obvious stuff, these were a couple of my favorite tunes that featured his great backing fills...


Last but not least, he rocked the white boy 'fro like no other, with only BOC's Eric Bloom, J. Geil's Magic Dick, and the MC5's Rob Tyner as(weak)competition.

For some reason, back in the day, their LPs ended up at 7-11 stores selling for $1.99.

They were on Dunhill records and when the label went south I think the rack-jobbers dumped the inventory as 'cutouts'.
back on topic/ Born To Be Wild came out when I was 13, I was a fan from the get go. Many "basement" hours were spent listening to them, I dug Goldy's B3.

I'm checking out "Magic Carpet Ride" right now...nice ensemble playing + jamming.
The bass figure on the verses has a nice displaced thing on Beat 3 in Bar 2.
Somebody was thinking.
