RIP Reggie White

I'm a die hard Packer fan. Reggie was a hero around here. He said he wanted to go in the Hall of Fame as a Packer.

He had Sleep Apnea. Yes, he stopped breathing (which is what happens to those with sleep apnea), but he never started breathing again.

Reggie never used, nor needed, steroids to be the awesome player he was. He was a class act all the way. We'll all miss him.

same here...i was really hoping that he would come back to the pack as a coach or something (and boy could the defense now use him now!).

Reggie was a great man on and off the field, and i hope more NFL players follow in his example!

RIP reggie White :crying:

This is a scary story...I have sleep apnea. I always hear the "you can die from it", but never heard of someone who actually did. From what I heard on ESPN radio, his wife is claiming it was respiratory failure resulting from sleep apnea. I guess she would know a little about it if anyone. Regardless, I'll stick close to the story to find out the exact truth.

For those who remember...Clyde Simmons is the only one alive now from that awesome Philly defensive line in the early 90's.

Yeah, I know a guy who has this as well. Is it real common?

Not sure. They found it in me when they did a sleep study on me to see why I was always tired. At the time, they told me it was because of me being overwieght. I since dropped the excess pounds, but I still have it.

It was really hard hearing about his death yesterday. I feel really sorry for his family, it adds a very unpleasant reminder to the Holidays.

As far as the Packers go, his signing was what gave the Packers legitimacy- even with Favre, they don't get the free agent signings on either side of the ball.

Sure he had is not so great moments here. The Onion coined a great phrase for his movie- "pants wettingly funny" not that it was meant to be. But overall he left great memories for the people around here. My favorite moment? Making Korey Stringer (RIP) puke on national television.

God Bless You Reggie.

OMG!!!! I remember that and laughed until I almost puked. No disrespect to the departed Korey, but as a Packer fan, I've always viewed the Minnesota Vikings as steaming piles of feces. RIP Reggie.

I'm a former Sleep Apnea sufferer. After major surgery earlier this year, I lost 70 pounds. One of the great benefits of this is that my SA has all but disappeared.

Sleep Apnea can be a very serious condition. If you're overweight, you're a good candidate for developing SA. Frequent and loud snoring is a symptom. At it's most serious it can be fatal, although it's fairly rare that a SA sufferer stops breathing and just never starts again. More deaths occur from accidents caused by patients' lack of restful sleep. There's lots of info about Sleep Apnea here http://www.sleepapnea.org.

The most common and effective treatment of Sleep Apnea is the use of what's called a CPAP (pronounced see-pap) machine. If Reggie wasn't using one, and if in fact Sleep Apnea was the cause of his death...well that would be a damn shame.

Mike...you were diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, and you're not currently using a CPAP machine? Was one recommended? Even if you're not covered for one by your medical insurance, they're fairly inexpensive (500-800 bucks), and are priceless if you consider what the effects of untreated Sleep Apnea can be.

Lets not diss Korey Stringer, has he's no longer with us either... Remember, he died of a heart attack during spring training a couple of years ago. A person's life is more valuable than your participation as a fan, dude...

Korey was an alumni of Ohio State & when he died is was devestating event here in Columbus.

Evidently you missed the "NO DISRESPECT" part of my post?

My doctor said my SA does not require a CPAP at this time. It is only really bad when I sleep on my side according to the sleep study I had done. I go in every few months to have it checked out. If it get's worse, then I will be given a CPAP. I have used it a few times, and after I got used to it, I had no issues with it.

I heard this morning that Reggie died from Sarcoidosis.

That's scary. I was diagnosed with sarcoid years ago. I was told it primarily affects the lungs and eyes of middle aged black men, at the time I was 25 y.o. and half asian/half white. It was discovered while undergoing a routine chest X-Ray and I had these nodules all over my lungs. I had no difficulty breathing, but I was convinced I had lung cancer and was going to die soon- so I smoked around 4 packs of cigarettes a day and drank like all hell for a few weeks until I had the bronchoscopy to tell me I had sarcoid.

Mine cleared up on it's own, and I had no idea the disease could be fatal.

My 10 year old son was also diagnosed with sleep apnea after years of us thinking (and being told by "experts") it was autism or Asberger's Syndrome. During a sleep study, he would stop breathing for as long as 20 seconds before starting again. He was always complaining of being tired. He was unfocused in school and in conversation. He didn't socially participate with others and overall was very lethargic.
Since his tonsilectomy, his sleep has improved, he's doing better in school, his attitude overall and playing energy is better.

Regarding Reggie White: Such a great NFL career and then finding a greater pursuit...the Word of The Lord. Only to be called home too early.

God Bless you Reggie.

Aaron...good to hear that your son is doing better. I have considered some invasive surgical procedures, but none are gauranteed to cure the SA. The only thing they gaurantee is possible permanent damage to my airway.
