RIP Sean Connery

A true loss. I grew up watching the Bond movies, and Connery’s were always my favorite. If I had to choose, You Only Live Twice would be my favorite of his but I’d need to go back and revisit them as it has been a few years. He’s one of those personalities you just expect to go on indefinitely.

I think the way Craig does Bond is closer to what Flemming had in mind in the books, but when it was translated to the screen with all the razzle dazzle, Connery brought a personality and flair to the role that it needed in that context. If the producers had chosen an actor with Craig’s demeanor back then, it just wouldn’t have worked. Craig did redeemed the franchise back from the cartoonishness it had become with Moore and Brosnan.

I just read the Wiki entry, and learned that when he was considered for the role Connery was not thought to be suave enough by author Ian Fleming. Fleming had David Niven in mind for Dr. No, and if you're familiar with Niven's work you would consider him noticeably more refined, slim, and less athletic, almost effeminate compared to Connery (also a criticism leveled at Brosnan and the aged/aging Moore). The women in that inner circle (Mrs. Fleming, Ms. Broccoli, et. al.) insisted Connery had the sex appeal and was the right choice, and he got the nod. But the director still had to polish him up a bit and gave him pointers on how a refined UK gentleman would dress, walk, talk, eat, etc.

Bond has always been a triple threat of suave sexuality, a cunning mind, and raw animal physicality. In those respects, only Craig has filled the shoes as well as Connery IMHO. In an age of improved videography, more realistic effects and stunt work, and relaxed standards for violence, the physicality displayed by Craig's Bond is impressive and may eclipse what Connery did in his movies. I was totally surprised and knocked out by Casino Royale. I didn't think some of those Connery Bond films could be matched, and I was wrong. (Now, the next three movies, well, they really squandered an opportunity if you ask me. Not even close.)

On another note, Connery as Captain Ramius in Hunt For Red October was just a killer performance. Air tight.

All of them still better than the original Bond, Barry Nelson. A yank? Inconceivable! I’d be rooting for the villain...

Of course, this is Connery’s greatest bit of acting...who else could keep a straight face in that outfit? But then he ends up with prime time Charlotte Rampling...

Say it isn't so! Man, what a year...

:bawl: very sad, 2020 go f off

Wow - James Randi and Sean Connery in the span of a week. 2020 is HARSH.

RIP Sir Sean.

couldn't agree more

RIP Mr. Connery

uhh, no...

Every year sucks in its own way; there may be events in ‘21 that would cause you to think “man, ‘20 was rough but not as bad as this”.

I love me some Skyfall. Daniel Craig just smolders, twenty-four seven. He’s a really interesting actor. I hope they do their due diligence and nail the next casting as well.
All the people paid to blast us with their opinion are saying it's going to be a gender bend. Meh. Just call her Brittany Jones and let her sink or swim on her own merits.

RIP Sean Connery
1930-2020
I am heartbroken to learn this. Truly an icon of my generation.
Please list your 1 favorite film.
I will start. The Russia House.
Despite growing up on Bond movies I think that The Russia House is his finest on-screen endeavor. Each to his own. He will be greatly missed.
Thanks
