Slim Whitman died of heart failure on June 20th. He was 90. Like Huell Howser (dead, as well), there will never be another Slim Whitman. It seems that Andy Kaufman (also dead) shared my perverse appreciation of Slim's work. After all, he saved the world from those nasty Martians ... ACK!
Ya know...I didn't want to mention how Slim Whitman's music knocked out the Aliens but he was good and my mom and dad miss him. RIP.
I was surprised when I heard that he'd died, because honestly I thought he had already died back in the 80s. I must've confused him with someone else.
RIP Slim. I feel bad for just having assumed that he was already deceased. When my grandparents moved out of their house and in to an assisted living community, they were giving away a bunch of their stuff to the kids and grandchildren. My brother grabbed a couple of records and one of them was Slim Whitman's All My Best. I'll never forget how creepy it sounded when we pulled out my dad's old Technics table and listened to Indian Love Call for the first time. The static and pops really added atmosphere. I went on to buy the Essential Slim Whitman CD, which has a ton of tracks, and enjoyed quite a few of them. There's something great about cruising down the highway, windows down, blasting Rose Marie, At The End of Nowhere, or I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen. His voice truly is a unique specimen.
