Pffft! Must be one of those 'Pleasantville' type of towns where everything is perfect and in Black & White! Must be a boring place to live! Geez!

Actually it is a rural farming community made up of very poor migrant laborers and wealthy ranchers (these are thier daughters more than likely).

Schools in this area are known for drawing lines in very odd places as far as discipline goes. It all depends on who complanes about what.

When I was in High School, (1980-1983)...if you were given a directive by a Principal or VP, and you countermanded that directive of your own volition, you were "Expelled" not just suspended. This is where the problem lies, complete lack of respect for authority. That's sad. Not only the lack of respect, but the fact that "adults" these days are too lazy to teach their children to respect authority.

Wow. They were strict where you grew up! I graduated in '81. Our cheerleaders would have received detention, and the JV squad would have been given the varsity games for at least a few games, maybe the season.

But then again, no one would have made a big deal over something like this stunt, either.

Right? The Rangerettes show their spankies every other dance move.

Someone got their undies in a wad over bloomers, and whined. Then a few more little prudy busybodies whined louder. Then the principal told the girls they couldn't include it in the routine, because of the whiney-whiners. The girls went ahead with it, because, honestly, forbidding it was stupid. Being teens, the girls rebelled...OMG, teen rebellion! When they received a punishment far outstripping the "crime", they got mad, and mouthed off.

This should never have gotten as far as it did. Whiney busybodies are ruining the planet.

Entitlement and lack of respect for the rules, and authority are the main problem, yet too many cannot even grasp that point. High school mentality passed on from adults to their kids these days(notice I didn't say parents, as parenting is a rare commodity these days.)

Lack of respect for authority can be a problem. It is a two-way street, though. (But I'm not an authoritarian to begin with.) Even legitimate authority that involves itself in regulating trivial or unnecessary matters only undermines itself. IMHO, that's a point worth grasping.

Nothing breeds disrespect for rules more than arbitrary, capricious, and pointless rules.

I think a lot of us don't understand why he forbade it. Respect for rules is good, yes. But unreasonable rules do not deserve respect. The fewer the rules, and the more practical and reasonable they are, the more they are obeyed.

I respect authority. I do *not* respect unreasonable authority. The VP not only laid down an unreasonable rule, but then gave a punishment that was unreasonable. Yes, they should have been disciplined. The rule was stupid, but they did break it. But the discipline they got was totally out of line with what they did.

I am sick to death of our public school kow-towing to the hand-wringers of this world. We can't continue making rules (not just for kids, but for ourselves) because someone gets offended.

The application of unreasonable rules with unreasonable punishment is a recipie for rebellion.

Why is this such a big issue. Who the hell cares. This wasn't lack of discipline. This isn't a troubling cause. So what, some saucy cheerleaders showed their backsides? Quick, stop the presses!

I completely agree. the punishment doesn't fit the crime. The story says they aren't given the chance to make up missed work? Come on. So not only are they suspended, they are now behind in work. Detention was enough.

Ugh...Things like these really piss me off to no end. You older folk say this generation is questionable, all this bogus. its your generation thats irrational. How the hell can you justify suspending the girls, denying them the chance to catch up on homework, and potentially being kicked off the cheerleading squad? That is completely gone too far. Detention was all they needed. Suspension was too far.

I'm gunna stop venting. Issues like this have gotten me suspended from school, and I'd rather not be banned from TB.

I get disgusted at the grinding moves the cheerleaders I teach do in their routines, and I do work hard as a coach to get rid of the slutty stuff and bring back a little bit of respectability to the activity.

I don't even look at cheerleading squads anymore because of that(ain't dead, just don't want to go there mentally). At a gig on the dancefloor? That's WAY different.

Disobeying direct instructions in this smalltown school would probably lead to suspend or expell, depending on the size of the parents' influence and/or bank account....sometimes.

Nice comment about the "Butt Billboards" seen on backsides everywhere. They should just paint "LOOKY HERE!" on their shorts.

To be fair, most of the people supporting the girls in this thread are not teens/20-somethings. I'm 45. If my daughter had been punished that severely, for something this trivial, you can bet I'd be at that VP's door, making myself a severe nuisance to him, at the very least.

If I were to have a daughter, and something like this went down. I'd be doing the same. There are bigger issues then this. gang violence, drug use, underage binge drinking....teen pregnancy...Yah don't see a pregnant teen getting suspended to you?
