Ripon Cheerleaders suspended

Over-reacting? Sure. Funny thing is that I'll bet the school district sells "butt shorts" with the school logo or name on them.






Not sure if there's a "real" name for them, but that's what they call them around here - the shorts that have something printed written on the but so that you're compelled to look at the girl's butt to see what it is/says. It seems like every girl over the age of eight makes up 3/4 of their wardrobes with them.

When I was in High School, (1980-1983)...if you were given a directive by a Principal or VP, and you countermanded that directive of your own volition, you were "Expelled" not just suspended. This is where the problem lies, complete lack of respect for authority. That's sad. Not only the lack of respect, but the fact that "adults" these days are too lazy to teach their children to respect authority.

In my circle of friends, we call those Trailer park Billboards......funny how the hooker look has become high style. :p

Ripon is about 10 miles north of me (100 miles straight east from San Fransisco).

This is BS, the same school will allow sweats with words like "sexy" or "juicy" written on their butts cuz it is from Abercrombe & Finch or Macy's. It is selective enforcement. Ripon has some VERY conservative Christians with a fairly large German Baptist and Dunkard Bretheren population (Think Amish with cars and TV's) that probably complained.

BTW most cheerleaders sound like that at some point, they all can come across as snotty, it's the nature of the beast.

Defiance is a part of finding ones own self. If each and every person only did what they were told to do the world would be a very different place. You have to take the good with the bad where defiance is concerned...a defiant mass murderer is bad; defiant cheerleaders at a High School Football game, not such a big deal.

Defiance may be a part of finding one's own self but so is dealing with the consequences. They were only suspended for two days. Take your punishment and get on with it. Seems to me this would be the ultimate defiant attitude.

Another thing is we don't know who contacted the media about this issue. It isn't that big of an issue at all, especially big enough to be discussed on talkbass.

OMG what a big surprise, snotty cheerleaders! I was a cheerleader in high school and college and though not all cheerleaders are snotty, a great number of them are. I teach cheerleaders now and for some reason as soon as the short skirt comes on, the brain turns off. It's an amazing phenomenon!

It's not uncommon for cheerleaders to wear spankys (the briefs underneath the skirts) with the school name, school mascot or if the mascot is a cat, two paw prints on them. And the skirts do come up and fly around displaying the spankys--it's the purpose of a cheerleader to entertain. Plus, if anyone has seen the uniforms that they wear nowadays, I think they're more akin to bathings suits than cheer uniforms.

Lots of cheerleaders do stunts like the Ripon cheerleaders did, it's not original or new. In fact, a similar thing was done in the movie "Bring It On." It just happens that Ripon may be more religions and conservative. I get disgusted at the grinding moves the cheerleaders I teach do in their routines, and I do work hard as a coach to get rid of the slutty stuff and bring back a little bit of respectability to the activity.

That event was hardly newsworthy.

I'd like to thank the Ripon cheerleaders for displaying the worst attributes of cheerleaders on national TV. Cheerleaders are supposed to be leaders and set examples and uphold school spirit.

And now I'm off to control the "outrage" on all the cheerleading boards. :rollno:

I'm willing to bet one of the parents threw a hissy fit to the media about this if it wasn't one of the girls.

Or the fact that parents would even support their kids in circumventing that authority

That's not the point of the story. I agree that what they did as far as the routine was pretty tame. The fact that the ending wasn't approved and they did it anyway is why they're in trouble. And to compound the matter they mouthed off and got into more trouble. Serves them right.

"Countermanded"? "Directive"? Was your high school located in the War Room in Dr. Strangelove?

Seriously, those words make this episode sound far more serious than it was.

I don't see anything wrong with this. My daughters played softball against another team that wore white baseball pants and had slogans sewed on their panties - so they showed through the baseball pants when they crouched to bat. No big deal.

I don't see anything here other than a very mild prank that is quite unremarkable. Must have been blue noses in the crowd and a slow news day locally.

I understand your point, really I do, but this infraction in adult terms would be on a level of turning right on red... but you're right... hey, not only do kids need to learn to respect the rules, but to respect each other and themselves a little more. :)
