Of course, I know a lot of you think anything you could do to RW Fender would be an improvement!!

It's been a great bass; light weight, sounds like P Bass perfection, smooth, bloomy tones you just can't get from a non-P.

I had to finally admit to myself the 1 3/4" nut was not cutting it for me. My other basses are an American Jazz, a 96 Precision LYTE deluxe, and a recently added G&L ASAT. All 1 1/2" necks. I also have an American Standard Jazz V, which admittedly I don't play much.

The thing isn't the width, it's the string spacing on that beautiful vintage styled neck. I'm just so aware of it, going back and forth. I actually listed this bass and another vintage style Precision on TB Classifieds. The other bass sold, but there were 3 other RW Ps listed, and I wasn't giving it away!

So Voila! Blasphemy!!

I am storing the RW neck away, in case I have a change of heart, but this feels so good, I don't see that happening!

I thought "road worn" meant tying it to the rear bumper and dragging it around the block a couple of times.

So a guy posts about not being able to get along with a 1.75" nut width. He solves his problem by putting a neck with a 1.5" nut on the bass, and instantly likes the bass much better.

It is heartwarming to see that bass players are classy enough that they can share their experiences and preferences rather than act like a bunch of douchebags and spout cliches about fake wear and dragging basses behind cars.

For my part, I don't much care for a 1.75" nut on a four string, but I love it on a fiver. Somewhere around 1.6" on a four is perfect for me. On this bass, I'm not sure I like the crispy, clean look of the new neck on a vintage-looking body.

It probably would get normally "THAT" worn down there through use. Anybody who owns/had owned a bass with an anodized pickguard would know they wear easily from friction (and from sweat especially). Your assumption nobody uses it was wrong. To summarize the correct answer to your question is through friction and sweat.

More wear under a thumbrest (again that hardly anyone uses down there) than around the pickup which shows nearly NO wear? Hmmm...nah. It's not even a thumbrest down there...it's a finger anchor if anything...and no one I've seen playing with their thumbs (especially not slap players) ever anchor their fingers to the thing. It's about as useless as the strap button on the back of the headstock...but I bet they put some "wear" around that as well on some models.

Sure, friction and sweat wear down anodized aluminum, but they should put the wear on the mass produced basses where most people actually touch the damn things.

Is that a roadworn J neck?
If not you might consider investing in one of those, then it would be less blasphemous.

I feel like there's an ideal neck 'volume' for people.
For me at least.
If it's narrow like a J, I want it to be thick front to back.
If it's wide like a P, I can be a little thinner front to back.

In either case I'm not into anything less than .8" thickness.
