just curious why you have a DI near the start of the chain? But I guess doesn’t matter as you are just running all into a head and can anyway?
Of you want more grind you could boost the sand amp gain into the rattler?

Hey! Just because it's a DI, doesn't mean that it doesn't sound great into an amp. I feel like the Bassman by itself is a bit "fluffy" so the Sansamp makes things sound...less fluffy. Speaking scientifically of course. The blend control is set to 50% and if you wanna hear how it sounds...check out the second clip (clean-ish). I also use the Sansamp into all of the pedals 'cos it ends up feeding the pedals more of what I want.

There are some perfectly fine devices present, but I too question the sequencing and have concerns about redundancy.

The sequencing hurts MY head too, but I'm not sure what redundancy you're referring to? Most things were definitely adding a thing (although the RAT isn't doing as much as I'd like and I'm gonna swap it for something else)

first three tones are so similar you’d never distinguish in a live setting. Your clean tone isn’t clean. Last two tones are great! (Oops, not a roast)

But seriously. That pedalboard? Dude. Unfinished PINE? And DRYWALL SCREWS? OMG ***??? What WERE you thinking??

The tone gets much cleaner when I'm not hammering on the strings with a pick like a wannabe James Hetfield. Using fingers and a P-Bass? It cleans up better. LIKE YOUR MUM LOL.

I kinda agree that the first 3 are awful similar. I'll probably swap out the Rattler with my KHDK Abyss for an overdrive sound. There was a while where I was using the RAT to boost the other pedals but ehhh. Effectively, I LIKE RAT pedals and want to use one, but I don't think it's working out here....uh...LIKE YOUR MUM. LOL?

If those pedals are taped down you should have your eyes examined. I’d have raised the board to get the 1 spot underneath, the wiring looks like a 70’s man bush. I’ve had hickeys from hookers that looked classier than this… You asked for it.

You've got nails on the left side, and Phillips screws on the right. Reverse them and re-record.

This is the best advice I've received so far. I knew about the trick of using two different screws in the tonewood pedalboard. I know that the nails add depth to the bottom end and the screws add some punch and clarity, but I didn't realise I had them the wrong way!

Your mom sees more action than that pedalboard.

Yeah and if I was playing more "classic" oriented material I wouldn't be doing this much with it. However, this killer amp is an amazing pedal platform and handles pedals really well so that's why I'm doing a bunch of pedal experiments. If I'm running my P-Bass into this, it's basically just straight in with the Opto Compressor and that's it and it's happy days all 'round.

AND HEY.

MY PEDALBOARD COST ME 5 DOLLARS (Australian). I DID PRESSURE TREAT IT BY PUTTING IT IN FRONT OF THE CAB AND LETTING THE RAW SPL FROM A 1x12, PUSHING OUT MY AWE-INSPIRING TOANS SLAM INTO THE PEDALBOARD.

From these things, I can make the following noises.

Clean: Bass -> Amp, no pedals


Clean-ish: Bass -> Sansamp -> Amp


Rock: Bass -> Sansamp -> Jam Pedals Rattler (Rat) -> Amp


Metal: Bass -> Sansamp -> VT Bass -> Amp


Fuzz: Bass -> Morley Fuzz Wah -> Sansamp -> VT Bass -> Amp


Each clip was reamped (obviously) through the above pedals. Cab was mic'd up with a Mojave MA-300 Tube mic.

Thoughts? Loves? Hates? Suggestions? I'd like to get some more "zing" out of the Rattler, but if I increase the gain it gets woofier rather than...zingier.

no you can put them what ever order you want as long a you buffer afterwards.. and the pedals voltage and independence don't fight each other causing grounding and phase issues.. my guess is the comp at the end is neutralizing and regulating the signal.. and the rat in the middle.. has a nice gain structure..

so it's fuzz/wah> light overdrive> heavier overdrive> speaker fuzz> limiter ampifer/gain regulation> Modulation

The pedalboard itself was a shelf from Ikea which I cut down and deliberately used two different kind of screws to put it back together purely for the tonal perspective. You guys think you have tonewood in your basses? I got it in my pedalboard as well. Get on my level.

AND HEY. I HAVE ENOUGH BRAINS. I DIDN'T FAIL MUSIC CLASS.

If I did I'd be a drummer. With en electronic kit, that sample-replaces a sampled snare with another sample on top of it

I like a compressor after all my gain. Generally speaking, I like the attack that gain pedals add and I don't want to lose that attack by running a compressed signal into the pedals. I find having the compressor AFTER gain means I get to keep some "chirp" but still getting compressed goodness.

In my head, I'm going Fuzz\Wah -> Preamp -> OD -> Distortion -> Compressor -> Modulation. I'm considering putting the Fuzz\Wah AFTER the Preamp but my guitarist brain screams in protest at the idea of having a Wah second.

What bass are you putting into it?
I go overdrive, distortion, fuzz/wah, filter, reverb, delay, chorus.
From there into my genz Benz head as a DI out mostly. it seems to aim for most of your chain and I’d forget your guitarist brain depending what and how you are playing your bass… are you just root noting with effects? Are you doing mini bass solos? Or are you just turning everything up to 11 so you can do industrial noise “the neighbours like it so much they broke a window to hear it better”

The VT Bass clip was a bit harsh for me but your clean tone and Bass Driver was awesome! I liked the Rattler clip as well. Love it!

Ask your tech to use his feeler gauges when setting Your Mom's action so she gets some relief. Your Mom's your bass.

I'm running an Ibanez Soundgear with Nordstrand Blade pickups. It's pretty goddamn glorious.

One thing I noticed about the VT Bass is that when it is "last" in terms of gain, it forces a particular pick attack on the tone. It'll let the note bloom for a second, then really clamp down on and compress it, emphasising the pick attack. Since this is for thrashy-ish metal (with the odd Geezer Butler inspired lick), I do want as much pick attack as possible so that's why I've got the VT Bass last-ish.

I'm gonna try the Fuzz\Wah second, but it'll be interesting to see how the fuzz reacts to having a buffer in front of it. Some fuzzes freak out at that...

Thank you kindly! The VT Bass IS harsh, but it's gonna be competing with some real high gain guitars. Even though I'm more of a guitar player, it does irk me on a metal album when you can't hear what the bass player is doing. So I've gone for harsh "dingy" sorta noise so the pick attack cuts through.

I'm probably gonna replace the One Spot with a Voodoo Labs 8x for future expansion. If I wanted to add something else to this chain I'm out of luck unless I start daisy-chaining but ehhhh. This is more for a studio setup than a live setup.

But yeah, some extended legs is a good idea. I think I know which ones I'll get come to think of it. I've been inspired by your Mum's wooden legs. Also, let her know that the bugs crawling on her aren't termites.

I was lucky enough to inherit the Fender. Unfortunately I can't afford an SVT. Also, I do not have the space, necessary fire extinguishers, and though my neighbours are very kind and patient, I don't think they're that patient. Not that I'd hear them knocking to complain.

Plus...I mean you can't say the Fender sucks. It's not what we call a massive compromise in the overall scheme of things if I'm able to get these noises out of it
