Robben Ford... New Live CD

Soul on 10.....

Travis Carlton (Larry's son) on bass. It's very good, and Travis has the Sadowsky J tone goin' on.

It's not quite as killer as the older DVD with Jimmy Earl on bass (that is stunningly good), but worth it for those of you who think that John Mayer Trio stuff sounds good:smug:

Cool! I've never had the pleasure of seeing him live, but that 'Talk To Your Daughter' CD kind of defines my approach to 'bar band guitar trio/quartet' playing. Wonderful!

If you don't have that live DVD, it's really something. Jimmy Earl is a freak of nature.... massive grooves and old school playing, and then a Patitucci level solo. Scarey good! And his tone... whew!

That DVD is great. I always show it to my musician friends as an example of a great band that really "listens". I liked how they didn't go back and try to fix the mistakes - like during "You Got Me Knockin", when the soundman abruptly unmutes the keyboard player's vocal mic. You can see the drummer laughing in the background.

This will be the third time I've seen Ford live. Once with Greg Allman and Friends (also w/ Willie Weeks and Neil Larsen) and last year with Dan Lutz and Joel Taylor. Hopefully you can see him play at some point, Ken.

Man, I haven't ever seen Willie live either. I need to get to Nashville more often!!!!

Hey, there's a good buddy of mine (Ted Tretiak) that plays an organ trio gig (drums, guitar, B-3) on Wednesday night at a little bar somewhere in Nashville. Do you know that gig? It's supposed to be a great hang, and I've been meaning to make it down there sometime to check it out. Supposedly, a lot of touring artists show up to sit in.

Anyway, enjoy the show and post up if you would!

Robben is one of my all-time favorite guitarists -- and a real gentleman. We have shared a bill on half a dozen occasions or so over the last 20 years. He and his brother Mark even sat in with us on the last 3 shows for some Butterfield Blues Band covers. I've read people say he is aloof, but that could not be further from the truth. He is a class act (and a great musician to boot). I never miss an opportunity to see him live.

My favorite backing band with Robben is Jimmy Earl on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. They just KILL!!

I love that CD because it was how my band sounded. I discovered it after we had been gigging for a while.

Have you heard of Matt Schofield? Heavily influenced by Robben Ford. Downside is his three piece band is guitar/drums/organ. Musically, it works great. I prefer to hear a bass player digging in. Definitiely worth a listen.

Will check out that Ford recommendation. Thanks for that.

All I know about him is that he is Larry Carlton's son (love Larry also... I understand he is playing on some dates with Steely Dan in Chicago coming up, where they are doing complete album shows). He sounds great to me! He really gets that 'classic' Sadowsky J tone, which I totally dig... punchy, grindy, with that touch of 'click and sizzle' up top. Great player and great tone to my ear!

The DVD in Paris (or somewhere in France) with that band is reeeee-diculous, Jimmy Earl just chews up those songs. No offense to Roscoe, but Jimmy can take the solos uptown and bebopy in a way I never heard with Roscoe, he was more coming from a classic blues approach. Jimmy still grooves hard and the songs felt a little more edgy to me.

Highly recommend that DVD too.

Also this current version of Robbens band (with Travis) is on the Rock Palast TV show as well from either last year or even this year. There is a hi-def version floating around on the internets. They kill. Maybe the new record is from that show?

The liner notes indicate it was recorded over a series of nights in a San Francisco club in April, 09, with a couple extra 'live in the studio' tracks at the end of the disc, and a download code for three additional bonus tracks recorded in that club.
