LOL! I stopped reading at "At 50yrs old his finger playing is so fast". *sigh*
As far as who he was up against in those auditions, it certainly serves to say they edited that to make him look like the clear winner there so that's no shock. The competition shown wasn't anything to be run over by either. Trujillo doesn't really have a Metal background to begin with. His work with Ozzy/BLS being the jist of his "Metal" playing/work.
As far as his chops, he's a good bass player and does his own thing, sometimes his tone is a little too mushy for me personally but all in all it works under the current Metallica cover bands sound.
Now here comes the sad part, Metallica is not about making music or honing your craft. Rob has honestly regressed some since being their hired hand. DM has potential for sure but nope they went and ****ed it all up in the way only they could do it...
Guitar Tone: Thin, Pathetic, Weak
Vocals: Not a care in the world for being in tune or even filtered, nope..just spit into an open mic dry as hell and yep, that will do.
Drums: No kick drum, weak, and sloppy playing (no shock there)
Leads: Wah Wah diddle diddle Wah Wah Wah...*crank whammy bar* Waaaaaah
Bass: Not that bad actually considering the above, nobodys tone could shine through that pile of excrement..Rob gets a pass
Now you are thinking "Sheesh, you really hate Metallica eh?"...Answer: Nope, been my favorite band since I was a kid but I am not blind and most certainly I am not deaf. They have become a parody of themselves and they have no standard for their music, they will literally slap anything on and call it a record, yet still take a year plus and god knows how many millions to do so.
Again, Metallica aren't about making music or focusing on musicianship..that ship sailed nearly 20yrs ago by now. Every single one of them have declined in their musical ability, why? Because they don't practice or respect their craft. When was the last time any of them did any musical project outside the machine known as Metallica? Don't worry, i'll wait...
Kirk and Lars are by far the worst of the bunch, the weakest links. Lars because he is a douche he blatantly states that he doesn't practice ever and that he has regressed. Kirk? This one to me is a baffling mystery, it is as if he has forgotten all the basics of guitar playing because Kirk's work from 83-93 is a completely different musician, hell give him until 1999 to be nice if you like. He literally cannot play in tune to save his life...literally! His vibrato is so goddamn out of tune that he is either deaf or has arthritis in his hands...i'd at least respect him if he came out and admitted having arthritis or something because fuuuuck makes no sense at all otherwise.
James: Still seems to have his guitar chops for the most part, a little played out in some spots but again they don't play music much but he remains the strong link in that chain by far
Rob: Hired hand who has been with the band for 14yrs now and has one album under his belt. Poor guy, he got the leftovers after Newsted bailed off that sinking ship. lol
I have no expectations for their next album, it should be out around 2021 or so...I mean why put out an album more than once every 10yrs? That would be too musician like, nah let's tour Europe constantly playing the same worn out crap, I mean hey people keep paying for it, why not?
LOAD & RELOAD: Man, people give these albums absolutely hell but the funny thing about those albums is that they had some of the best guitar/bass tones and drum sounds and production of their entire catalog. I have said it and will say it again, IF Death Magnetic had those tones/production it would have been epic.
I could go on and on about those clowns now...30+yrs being professional musicians and they cannot produce a decent sounding album to save their lives and they slap anything on, no standard, nothing left and it's sad but true....
