Robert Trujillo and Metallica

You can clearly see he struggles in not just coming up with something on the fly but the flow of doing so, this to me shows he doesn't spend much time doing jams like this with other musicians sharing ideas and just having fun being a musician. Rob is a musician, the only one actually in Metallica but it's clear it has affected even him. It's almost if they insulate themselves from music
Whereas Andy Irvine "flows" in his off the cuff runs, no stuttering in his playing.
I think this was awesome to see, this is two musicians just jamming and having fun, smiling and digging each others input. THAT is what it's about IMO.
Listen to Cannibal Corpse. Those guys are at the top of their game and remain true to metal and music (and vegetarianism).
I grew up listening to CC and loved all their stuff, and Alex Webster happens to be one of my favorite bassists. Such a noble dude. But after watching this free documentary, I have to give it up to them even more. I think any musician would enjoy watching Centuries of Torment.
I see a lot of arguments about Metallica in how they "changed". I saw no problem with that actually, as a musician your tastes change and develop over time. That is why I never found Slayer in the least bit interesting, again personal choice there.
Pantera, perfect example of a band who found their sound and from CFH on they were "Pantera" that we all know but as they went even they inter-weaved various slower melodys and Phil got to use some range here and there and not just "Ahhhhhhhhrgh" the whole time.
I will never understand the hate for the Black Album, it baffles me. It was a sonic wall of sound and was a 100% improvement production wise from AJFA. Lars and Jason learned what a rythum section should be and the song writing was really good. Kirk's solo's were tasteful and the notes shown through...the fact is and it's well documented that Bob Rock rode his ass into the ground to get that out of him but the fact is, he got it out of him. Now? Nobody cares and they let him slap on anything regardless how pathetic.

I agree the loudness on DM is too bad, but it's the worst thing about that album. If everyone agrees Loudness sounds awful, why do they keep doing it?!
Yeah I too grew up with Metallica. It was hard seeing them go through what they have. But I figure, most bands that have been together for over 30 years are bound to change a little if not a lot. You kinda have to. I love old AC/DC stuff but I could care less about their nwer stuff, it sounds like a constipated old man screaming with some hard blues behind him. NO thanks.
But back to Metallica. They were one of those bands that really opened my eyes and ears to music as I was coming of age. I will always love and appreciate a lot of those albums from the Cliff through the Jason years. I too lost interest though after Load, which i dug to a degree. I tuned out but still gave them a chance from Re-Load and on. I didn't buy anything from them till Magnetic came out. All I had to hear was Rick Rubin was working with them and I was in. So I got it. I dont care what anyone says, those guys can still rock some s**t. And that album was brutally awesome. It was nice to see them reinvent themselves to a degree. I look forward to hearing what the next one will sound like. I still dont listen to them much anymore, mostly the old stuff from Puppets and back when I do, but they will always be one of those bands that changed things for me on a lot of different levels, they will always have a special place for me, no matter how much crap people talk about them or how much they may suck or rock. And Cliff will ALWAYS and forever be an inspiration to me.

As a fan of Metallica since the 80's. I first got into them in the Master of Puppets era, always loved Ride the Lightening. I did notice Newsted getting lost in the mix as a young man, but didn't care... I was more into guitar work back then anyway, though I would play bass in bands as much as anything.
Anyway, Robert Trujillo is a perfect fit with his style and looks. When I heard he was joining the band I couldn't have been happier. Now knowing what we all know about the band itself, I would never judge his talent based on what Metallica produces with him. Having said that, I thought Death Magnetic was their best recording since the early 90's.

He’s a master at Metal and Hard Funk Grooves. His range is endless

Put the Garage Inc. sound on DM and it would have blown people's minds but nope, let's shag it up so it sounds like crap.

I hate to be the one, but we're both Infected by Grooves, so I'll ask: What do people think about him and Jaco?
What I think I know of his involvement has been honorable and very bass-mojo-worthy, but that doesn't jive with the "doesn't matter what people think" bit.
My own 2 cents on the R.T. / Bass of Doom thing: I think many bassists are in love with Jaco's legend (just look at all of the basses people pass off as "one Jaco handed me / looked at" and all the Jaco-related threads & comments here on TB). I like that Trujillo seems to love the world of BASS GUITAR just like many people here in TB, and he got involved where he could be useful (wrt the Bass of Doom).

A lot of purist do not think that R.T. should own one of Jaco’s basses. And feel he should sell it and give the money to Jaco’s family. Also Robert is making (or has made) a documentary about Jaco and the purist once again think is some sort of disgrace………..there’s a lot of info on Google about this topic
Whether you agree or not is does not take away from R.T.’s abilities…..I for one thinks he has a lot of respect for Jaco and what he has done for the bass community

IIRC, he gave that bass (all rights to it) to the Pastorius family after he bought it. I don't recall if they were supposed to "buy it back" or if he gave it to them. From what I read, he became close with the family during the process. If Jaco inspired him, i think its cool that he got involved and gave back.
Most of what I "know" about all this came from the Internet. Multiple sources over the years paint a common picture, but I don't rely on it for accuracy.
Dude has killer chops. Seems pretty cool too.

2. If you think Trujillo is fast, check out these guys... who are also middle aged. It will change you and make you feel bad about yourself. It does me every time
The bill that evening was Metallica, Motley Crue (Shout at the Devil tour) and Ozzy (Bark at the Moon) It was a fun time, religious people protested the concert- ahhh the 80's!
Well done sir. You perfectly nailed the baloon of hot air that is Rob Trujillo's status. When I first watched that video I thought it was to sho whow good he was lol.
Here's a video of a LOT better bassists... well 2 anyway, and they do their job. Keep the rhythm going and let each other run with it.
