I watched it all, maybe I was a bit harsh but it was a nice jam session. He was just laying down the rythum for Victor and Steve.
Yeah. He's used to being in charge which comes off in the beginning by picking the scale and telling them drummer how to drum lol, but in all his bands, with exception of his new solo album he just holds down the rhythm. I think he wanted Wooten and the other dude to solo back and fourth. I just did not like the guy in the yellow shoes. I didn't feel he did much. Granted, with 3 bass players Im sure in order to serve the music you have to pick your spots but, I would have preferred if half the video was of him going crazy.
Maybe their catalogue after AJFA isn't too complex, and Kill 'Em All definitely isn't too difficult for any decently experienced player to cover, but try creating (or even recreating the ones i'm listing) songs like the AJFA title track, 'One', 'Orion', or the Master of Puppets title track with anywhere near the complexity/emotion in their playing and writing and you'll be at it for a good few years at least. You'd probably be famous and out playing those songs live by now if you could, as opposed to being on Talkbass discussing this.

I don't consider myself a great bassist but I can play Orion and Master just fine. One is a pretty easy song up until the last solo section unless you're a pick player, then it's pretty easy.
The Metallica 3 songs that actually require skill for a bassist to play IMO are Fight Fire with Fire, Damage Inc., and Anesthesia. I say the last one because I never got around to learning it note for note when I was first starting out.

Slayer
Anthrax
Metallica
Megadeth
I used to think I knew the Megadeth bass parts pretty well until I recently started listening to them on quality speakers. Ellefson throws some tricks in there that I HAVE to play with a pick, and I'm no pick player.
Ellefson is greatly underrated IMO, and he really makes Megadeth shine (though I haven't listened to much Megadeth past Cryptic Writings, although they're definitely one of my favourite bands of all time). I have to agree 100% about your order of difficulty, though my point was mainly regarding the composition of KEA-AJFA Metallica, both bass and, more specifically, guitar (and to a much lesser extent, drums, as a result of my limited drumming knowledge and also, ya know, Lars). Playing pretty much any song can be considered easy if you're well versed in that genre and/or bass in general, bar incredibly self-indulgent Sheehan solos or Wooten's best slap efforts and the like.
I'd like to see Kmonk write something as emotional/quality as One/Orion was my real point, I suppose. I mean, I can play Master of Puppets and i've only been playing for pretty much exactly a year, but he literally called their catalogue "very simple", which I cannot disagree more with.

There were 3 cool things about metallica,....1 was Cliff Burton, one of the most amazing bassists ever, 2 was Jason Newsted, he wasnt Cliff Burton, but no one is, and if he played like Cliff we would all accuse him of being a copy, Metallica did not and does not deserve him..and 3 was Dave Mustaine, I am a HUGE Megadeth fan, and if you ask me Metallica cannot compete with them when it comes to killer fast technical kick-ass thrash metal.
