i know this is against the grain, but I think that metallica could have done far better than Rob. His finger picking is out of the groove, he can't play solos to save his life and he looks like a fat skater boy with girly dreads. Sure cliff was the best, but jason's tight picking style matched them well i thought, allthough it took him a few years to get up to the task, by which time he was fed up and looking to leave. Who could have done a better job you ask? - David Ellefson and Rex Brown a far superiour bassists for metallica's sound in my opinion. Just check out their sound - especially holy wars. I guess we'll just have to put up with that idiot doing the crab dance on stage from now until they call it quits...

is it the distortion sound of a cranked SVT?
furthermore, i think that brand new strings as well as his emg's play a big role in this sound.
with a pasive fender p and the tech 21 vt pedal i can only nail this sound 50% and it doesn't sound as brutal and crushing.
any ideas?

Sounds kind of like one of the Boss OD pedals to me, I read Flea used one for the distortion intro for "Around the world" and Rob sounds kind of similar here. Also, I think you need a bass with more treble than a standard P bass to come close to how he sounds here.

"Please excuse this funk up" from Mas Borracho has some great bass work on it. Definitely one of mi favorite Trujillo grooves. Theres a sample clip of the song on lastfm.....

wel,, from what i could gather, he uses a sansamp. never saw a mention of a boss od but who knows...
very important seems the use of active EMG's. he also has custom electronics installed in his basses. maybe they have the trble boost at an uncommom center frequency?
I just saw Trujilio with Metallica last night. Great show, but I left with the feeling that Rob is dumbing it down. His little solo before "Bell Tolls" was awful. Not even self indulgent wankery that fellow bass players could have enjoyed. I know Rob could have pulled out some stuff that would have melted faces, but he didn't. *shrug*

oh-RYE-uhn would be the correct pronunciation of the great hunter's name for which Metallica named one of their best instrumental works.
Thanks for that. I haven't listened to IG in a LONG time. I remember seeing Suicidal Tendencies open for Metallica and they played a few Infectious Grooves tunes. It was amazing.
yeah, i read that he has a rectifier in his rig but does he actually use it? could the dirt, crunch, distortion also be because of it?
I think Metallica made a great choice with Rob.
He's a good player. He wasn't widely knowen of so he didn't have the baggage assocated with coming from another big band and the dude can look scarey.

He's one of my all time favorite crazy MF'er rock bassists. I got to see him with ST back in like '91, I was jammed up in the front barricade at Roseland, and he actually reached down and we knocked fists. That was the coolest $h!t ever (especially for a 17 year old H.S. punk like me.
