Saw them in Charlotte last fall. During soundcheck they were going though all instruments. When they got to the bass and that growl came through - it got the biggest response from the crowd. I loved his tone.
I bought the live recording from the show and it sounds so much better than what I heard that night - I dont think a huge concrete building helps the acoustics...
When they broke into Bellz - I just about went nuts - I couldnt believe his tone!!!!

I think he sounds good, but of course he got the job because he looks good on stage 
I saw them last summer and the show was really good despite of the crappy sound. Couldnt hear anything of what R.T did.. thats not his fault. He sounds really good on the last cd, when you can hear the bass buried under the wall of mid scooped guitars. The bass only tracks on youtube are exellent, if you want to hear him.
Having said that..Metallica must be IMO one of the most boring metal bands out there now.

i know for groove family cyco he was using a 6 string bossa, ob-6. maybe for sarsippius arc as well.
he's a monster player.
he was hired to play in metallica. which he does well.
I thought those were Fernandes or something other than warwicks?
i know he has a few custom built basses, and I'm not sure if it's by Fernandes, but I didn't seem to remember them being from warwick
You guys are so lucky....the rest of the world gets a chance to see Metallica once or twice a year.....down here we're lucky to see them once a decade! Last time they played in Australia was in 2004 but I missed out because tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes.
Needless to say, I'm absolutely dying to see them and Rob Trujillo live. I've seen videos of them (Nimes was a good one) and I find it hard to believe they can sound awful live. And as for Death Magnetic, production isn't the best but its certainly not a horrible album. Its the best thing they've released since the black album imo. Production aside, you can tell me you didn't feel like you were back in high school listening to "...and justice for all"...at least I did
As for Trujillo's tone, based on the videos I've seen of him playing, I think I prefer his tone off the "Some kind of monster" doco where he's using the Stingray (I think?) through the Hiwatt and the Mesa. That tone was BEAST! Have yet to hear him play with a Zon bass yet but all the Zon endorsing artists I've heard sound killer so I'm defs keen on checking that out.

yeah but his ZON has a maple neck so it might not be the typical ZON sound. you can see rob with the ZON i'm referring to (heck, he might have dozens of them in his bazillion basses collection) on their newest DVD "Orgullo Pasion Y Gloria" for example on "Sad but true".
if you don't like the mastering on DM, listen to it on vinyl. totally different. so nice. makes th album worth listening too.
also, i saw them play at the key arena in seattle with lamb of god and the sword.
the sound guys treated both lamb of god and the sword with disdain and screwed their sound completely. you couldn't hear lamb of gods drums at all. the sword had all sorts of issues i wont' go into. but THEY sounded good.
I had really good seats, and i could only barely hear Trujillo's bass. I remember seeing him with ST backin the day. he does have some decent tone. but i think he's buried to much under the weight of metallica. but that soots them, they've never really cared about the sound of the bass as much since they lost cliff. and justice for all was really the last album with any bass on it.

You must be listening to the album on a totally different soundsystem then what I use lol
I have my doubts that Jason even showed up to the studio when they were recording that
In "To Live is To Die" there are some phantom bass notes that somehow came through.
Kind of ironic, the one song he shouldn't have played on (Cliff's name on the credits, plus I don't like Newstead) the only song you hear him on.
I didn't say there was A LOT of bass, just that it was the last one with ANY at all.
